Arcanum graduates Alexis Wilcox and Abbigail VanHoose receive Greenville VFW Post 7262 scholarship

GREENVILLE – The Greenville Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7262 presented two scholarships to Alexis Wilcox and Abbigail VanHoose.

Arcanum 2022 graduate, Alexis Wilcox will be attending the University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, IN majoring in Sonography to become an Ultra Sound Technician in the medical field.

“It means a lot to me,” said Wilcox. “My dad is helping me pay for college and getting these scholarships is like a way of me giving back to him and helping him pay for my education.”

Greenville VFW Post 7262 past All-American Commander and current Post Quartermaster, Don Dietrich stated, “We give to students all year long that are looking for scholarships. All they have to do is come in and present where they are going to school.”

“Alexis came in and spoke at our meeting,” added Dietrich. “It is very beneficial to come in and speak.”

“I wrote a letter to the VFW and introduced myself and how I connected to the VFW,” Wilcox noted. “I have three uncles that were overseas. Two were in the Navy and one was in the Army. One uncle died overseas, one was a pilot overseas and I have an uncle that was a submarine navigator.”

Abbigail VanHoose also received a scholarship from Post 7262. The 2020 Arcanum-Butler graduate and valedictorian attends The Ohio State University majoring in Architecture and Interior Design and has been on the Dean’s List both her freshmen and sophomore years.

The funds to support the VFW scholarships comes from fundraisers and events throughout the year including the sale of chicken dinners the organization is known for.

“We give most of our money away,” Dietrich said. “At least fifty percent of it goes to charity.”
