Greenville battles injuries in loss to Sidney
GREENVILLE – The Wave dropped a 61-48 varsity boys basketball matchup to the Sidney Yellow Jackets in Miami Valley League play.
Sidney took the opening quarter 13-9 and period No. 2 by a 14-11 score to send the game to the break with the visitors leading 27-20.
Greenville continues to feel the effect of the injury bug that has plagued the varsity squad all season and once again brought up players from the JV squad to fill the roster including two freshmen and three sophomores to round out the team. Several missing from the game included veteran senior starters 6’4” Hayden Bush and 6’3” DJ Zimmer.
“They have played together for a while and it shows,” Greenville coach, Bobby Jones said of his younger players. “I told the guys in the locker room after the game, tonight was really the first night from a coaching standpoint and I am not just talking about myself, I’m talking about our staff.”
“We really felt like the guys put four quarters together where you are trying to do the things that we have been asking you to do up to this point,” Jones said, “figuring each other out, making the extra pass and finding the open man. We didn’t see very many wild shots tonight, we took some good shots.”
The Yellow Jackets extended its lead to 46-31 with three quarters in the book taking the third by a 19-11 count.
Greenville battled back to take the final 8-minutes 17-15 giving the Yellow Jackets the MVL win.
“There were times we could have taken a better shot but our guys were attacking…and against a team that is very unselfish and has three guys in double figures on the season you have to be able to attack,” added Jones. “I felt like for four quarters we were able to attack a good basketball team – that is why we were able to get some of the open shots we got.”
Greenville’s future continues to look bright as the JV squad defeated Sidney 51-41 in the early game.
