Greenville comes up just inches short in 2-point try bringing game to conclusion
GREENVILLE – The Wave dropped a double overtime loss in the Little Brown Jug MVL football matchup 49-48 to the Sidney Yellow Jackets.
“The game was going to end there one way or another,” said Greenville coach, Bart Schmitz. “I learned a lot about this team tonight. These kids fight.”
“We got better this week, we made plays, kids stepped up, kids were going down with cramps, we had a bunch of kids step up and have to play for us tonight,” Schmitz continued. “I am extremely proud of our team. I just wish we could have got that last play but that’s football.”
Greenville used a 5-play 29-yard scoring drive with Evan Manix passing to Brock Short on a 5-yard touchdown pass and an Avery Ernst PAT kick through the uprights to give the Wave a 7-0 lead at 11:54 in the second quarter.
Sidney answered with two second quarter TDs sending the game to the halftime break with the Jackets lead 14-7.
The visitors put together a 65-yard 6-play scoring drive to extend its lead to 21-7 6:37 in the third and made it a 28-7 game at 2:58 showing on the third quarter clock with a 6-play 58-yard scoring drive.
“Previous two weeks we were right there at halftime then the game got away from us and tonight we were in that same situation,” said Schmitz. “We were down by a touchdown at halftime and then all the sudden we’re down 28-7 and just fought back. Some kids took some butt ripping on the sideline when they deserved it and they responded and as the coach that is all I can ever ask for.”
Greenville battled back with a 7-play TD drive taking 1:46 off the game clock with Manix scoring on a 3-yard QB keeper Ernst splitting the uprights to trail 28-14 where the score would stand with three quarters in the book.
Sidney responded with a 5-play 69-yard TD drive to go back up by 21 with a 35-14 advantage with 11:09 remaining in the game.
The Green Wave offense answered with an onside kick, three touchdowns, 2-PAT kicks and a 2-point conversion while the defense was keeping the Yellow Jackets off the board to tie the game at 35-35 sending the game to overtime.
Scoring came from a Manix scramble good for a 25-yard TD, a Manix to Nolan Ellis TD pass, and Short 22-yard TD run and a 2-point pass conversion from Brock to Ellis.
The teams match touchdowns and PAT kicks in the first two 20-yard overtime drives with a 2-yard Short TD and a Manix to Casey Willis 8-yard TD pass.
Greenville chose to go for two on the extra point try only to come up inches short and come up a point short on the scoreboard.
“Evan (Manix) is getting there,” Coach Schmitz stated. “He played a whale of a ballgame tonight as well as everybody else did. I thought our offensive line with what they were doing up front gave him all sorts of time to be able to throw the ball. With everybody keying on Brock at times we had some guys step up. He (Manix) stepped up, Casey Wills stepped up, Jack Evans stepped up so we had a bunch of guys step up and it started up front. I thought our offensive line playing pretty well tonight.”
