Versailles Lady Tigers defeat Troy Lady Trojans in straight sets

VERSAILLES – The Versailles Lady Tigers led from wire-to-wire in defeating the visiting Troy Lady Trojans 3-0 in non-conference volleyball action.

“I felt like we remained confident,” said Versailles first year head coach, Liz McNeilan. “We were trying some new things so we lost some points here and there.”

The Lady Trojans came into the day sporting an 8-1 MVL mark and 8-3 overall while the Lady Tigers took the court with an 8-2 record.

“They were scrappy,” McNeilan said of Troy. “They were able to fight back and our goal was to score in chunks today and I thought we did that well. As soon as they started getting a little closer we dialed in a little bit more focus. I knew we had to go back to our go-to and get it done.”

Versailles took the opening set 25-21 and was one better in the second set of the night defeating the Lady Trojans 25-20.

Set No. 3 had Versailles downing the Troy girls 25-17 to win the match in straight sets.

“You can’t have a good team without passers in the back row,” said Coach McNeilan. “Your front row can do their job a little bit here and there but they’re not getting the attacks, they’re not getting the kills if your back row and your setters are not doing their job.”

“Our defense has been clicking, they’re talking to each other back there, they’re running seam balls very well and that gives confidence to the front row to be able to do their thing,” McNeilan added. “Defense, they’re coming up big right now, they’re executing, they’re dialed in and they’re ready to compete, they’re having a lot of fun.”

With the win Versailles improves to 9-2 on the season.
