Versailles knocks off Parkway

Versailles stays perfect with win over visiting Parkway

VERSAILLES – The No 2 state ranked DIII Versailles Tigers handed the visiting Parkway Panthers a 58-44 MAC loss on the Tigers home court to stay perfect on the season.

“We have good players that can make some plays and we had a lot of guys step up,” said Versailles coach, Travis Swank.

Parkway jumped on the Tigers early and raced out to a 6-2 first quarter lead with the team’s settling on a Panthers 15-14 lead after one quarter of play.

“Parkway is well coached,” Swank noted. “Coach Hughes has them well versed in whatever he wants to put out there. They played physical and they have two guys that can score. When you have two guys that can score you’re going to be in a lot of ballgames.”

Versailles stormed back to take the second period by a double digit 17-7 score sending the teams to the halftime break with the Tigers up 31-22.

Perion No. 3 saw the two MAC teams play to a 14-14 tie keeping Versailles with a 9-point 45-36 lead with one quarter to play.

The home standing Tigers defense held the visitors to eight fourth quarter points while the offense was adding 13-points to the board giving Versailles a 14-point win.

Ben Ruhenkamp led Versailles and all scorers with a game high 22-points.

“Ben found his sweet spot in the zone – that mid-range pullup is his sweet spot,” said Coach Swank.    “We were able to exploit it a little bit and Ben came through for us. Ben’s going to knock down that shot eight, nine times out of 10 so kudos for him to find the open spot and for our kids to give him the ball where he is very comfortable.”
