Arcanum's Hailey Unger sets Lady Trojan's Career Scoring Record in win over Carroll

ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans battled through highs and lows to defeat the Carroll Lady Patriots 53-39 in non-conference play.

“That was a good game for us going into tournament time,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore. “Last home game of the season – excited for what’s to come forward for this team.”

Arcanum’s Hailey Unger became the Lady Trojans all-time leading scoring in period No. 2 while Taylor Gray would go down with an injury with under a minute to play in the second quarter and would not return to the game.

Unger came into the day needing 17-points to break a 38 year old Lady Trojans scoring record of 1502-points held by Kelly Murphy from 1980-1984. Unger drilled her third triple of the game hitting a 3-pointer at 2:34 in the second quarter to put her at 1,504 points to stand alone atop as the new All-Time Lady Trojans scoring leader.

The game was stopped with 2:30 showing on the second quarter game clock while Coach Moore presented the game ball to Unger, the second of her Lady Trojans career – the first coming her junior season for scoring 1000 points.

“That is a huge accomplishment,” Coach Moore said. “Extremely proud of Hailey. Her ability to score – that’s nothing new to anybody. She can score pretty much anytime she wants. Her teammates did a great job of screening for her, getting her the ball and she’s able to create too. She did a little bit of all of that today which was able to put her over that milestone.”

Carroll made its presence known in the opening period keeping pace with Arcanum before the Lady Trojans would close of first quarter play with a slim 16-14 lead.

Unger led Arcanum with 10-first quarter points including two 3-pointers, Meghan McCans added 4-points and Taylor Gray went 2-2 at the free throw line.

Arcanum puts its OHSAA DIII No. 3 state ranking in action in the second quarter outscoring the visitors 15-8 to lead 31-22 at the break. Unger Paced the Lady Trojans with 9-points including her recording-breaking trey, Ellie Fout and Madelyn Fearon each chipped in 3-points.

Period No. 3 proved to be a defensive battle with Arcanum taking the quarter 8-5 sending the game to the final quarter with the Lady Trojans up with a double digit 39-27 advantage.

“I’m proud of our team’s response,” Moore said of Gray unable to play the second half. “It was emotional because they all care for each other and love each other and to see that emotion proves that. Proud of their response on the floor and how they were able with the emotions and get through and play the game – now it’s about getting Taylor healthy and moving forward.”

“Taylor was moving her fingers and toes so that is a good sign,” Moore noted. “She’s a tough kid so she’ll get through it.”

Arcanum outscored Carroll 14-12 in the fourth quarter with Coach Moore clearing her bench with just under 2-minutes giving the hometown fans on opportunity to give the five Lady Trojans seniors a standing ovation in their final home game.

Kylee Freeman led the Lady Trojans with 4-points, Unger nailed her fourth triple of the game, Ellie Fout went 3-4 at the line and McCans added a basket to round out Arcanum’s scoring.

“Kylee had some big minutes there in the second half and came in and had confidence and wasn’t scared, didn’t back down – proud of her for that.”

“It could have gone either way,” continued Moore. “The emotions could have got everybody or we could come out and put the peddle down a little bit more in that second half and that is what we decided to do.”

“Proud of Hailey,” Coach Moore said following the win. “She puts a lot of time, a lot of hard work into this and very deserving.”

Coach Moore took over the Lady Trojans basketball program following Hailey and her four senior teammate’s sophomore year.

“One of the first things I did – I sat down and had a conversation with Hailey,” said Moore. “I’m extremely proud of how she is buying into what I am wanting to do here in this program and just the team as a whole being able to do that. I am excited for this team and excited for the opportunity that we have and they deserve it. Everybody comes out here and practices every day and puts a lot of hard work in but I just feel like there is something special with this group and excited for their opportunity.”

“I love Coach Moore,” Unger stated. “It has been a great two years just having her and being able to play for her – it’s really fun. “Basketball is so much fun and I look forward to practice, I look forward to every single game and as a coach, Coach Moore is always on top of us, always pushing us to be better every single practice, every single day and I respect her for that.”

“I always knew I wanted to get my 1000 but I didn’t know that I would be able to make it this far. This wouldn’t be possible without my teammates. They have been there for me and they really helped me – pushed me so it has been great.”

Unger led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 26-points.
