Patriots win big over once defeated Dayton Christian with strong second half
NEW MADISON – The Tri-Village Patriots won the 2021-2022 Patriot Holiday Classic with a convincing 68-42 over the Dayton Christian Warriors.
Dayton Christian came into the night with a 7-1 record following a first round 55-42 win over the Eaton Eagles landing the Warriors in the championship game with Tri-Village.
“Dayton Christian came in with a great record,” said Tri-Village coach, Josh Sagester. “They have a lot of size, they have some skill level, they are obviously a very good Division III basketball team – real happy with our effort tonight.”
The Warriors came to the Patriots’ home court with a starting lineup including 6’8” Devin Dreier and 6’6” Adam Bletzinger to take a 15-12 lead after one period of play and was clinging to a 1-point 19-18 advantage with 5:42 showing on the second quarter clock before the Patriots would outscore Dayton Christian 50-23 the remainder of the game for the 26-point win.
Tri-Village outscored the visitors 19-7 in the second behind Layne Sarver’s 12-points including 6-7 at the free throw line sending the teams to the break with the Patriots leading 31-22.
Period No. 3 had Tri-Village making a statement putting 21-points on the board while a stingy defense limited the Warriors to 8-points giving the home team a 52-30 lead with one quarter to play.
Sarver accounted for eight third quarter points, Wilson Suggs with his second 5-point quarter of the night, Josh Scantland 4-points and Tanner Printz and Justin Finkbine with 2-points each.
The Patriots took the final period 16-12 for the win and earn the tournament title.
“It was a good non-league game for us,” Coach Sagester stated. “Our schedule is as tough as it has ever been under my leadership and we’re doing that for a reason – to try and hopefully make us better when we want to be playing our best basketball which is the end of February, the first of March.”
Tournament MVP, Layne Sarver led Tri-Village and all scorers with a game high 32-points including 10-11 at the charity stripe.
