Tri-Village Lady Patriots advance in tournament play

The Tri-Village Lady Patriots put 11 player in the scoring column in win over East Dayton Christian

TROTWOOD – The Tri-Village Lady Patriots opened 2021-2022 OHSAA DIV tournament play with a resounding 96-14 win over the East Dayton Christian Lady Eagles with 11 Lady Patriots getting in the scoring column.

The Lady Patriots raced out to a 20-0 lead in the opening four minutes of the first quarter and led 33-0 at the first quarter 2:19 mark bringing wholesale substitutions the remainder of the contest with the starting five not seeing the court in the final period of the night.

“It’s tough to balance games like this but obviously the message is to our kids – we have to come out, start the game and be us,” said Tri-Village veteran coach, Brad Gray. “We didn’t come out and put pressure on them full court but we tried to defend really hard in the half court because that is kind of who we are – getting your kids to understand we still need to play to our standard but also have respect for the opponent, understand what the opponents capabilities are and not try to do things where we are trying to play super-fast.”

Tri-Village would lead 35-0 before the Lady Eagles would get back-to-back free throws with time running out in the first quarter sending the game to the second quarter with the Lady Patriots holding a 35-2 advantage.

Lady Patriots’ junior, Rylee Sagester scored 16-points including three 3-pointers, two 2-point baskets and 3-3 at the line in the opening period, Morgan Hunt added 9-points including two triples, Meghan Downing accounted for 8-points and Torie Richards added a bucket to round out first quarter Tri-Village scoring.

Period No. 2 went to Tri-Village 19-3 with Downing and Maddie Bennett each scoring 6-points, Caitlin Robison 3-points, and Hunt and Chloe Godown each with 2-points sending the teams to the break.

“We didn’t try to play super-fast today,” Gray noted. “Once we got to the second quarter we tried to make a lot of passes but you play these game because you want to get your kids in here and get used to the environment. That is the important piece of playing these earlier round games.”

Second half action was played with a running clock making a quick second half with the Lady Trojans taking the third period 25-4 led by Downing’s 8-points, Hunt and Richards each with 4-points, and Sagester, Molly Scantland and Delanee Gray each canning a 3-pointer sending the DIV tournament game to the final period with Tri-Village leading 79-9.

The fourth period was played with the entire Lady Patriots starters on the bench with the bench putting 17-points on the board sending the Tri-Village to the next round of tournament play.

Belle Black paced Tri-Village with 7-point in the fourth, Bennett add 4-points, and Robinson and Ave Pipenger each knocked down triples to round out scoring on the night.

“We have some young kids that need minutes for hopefully what is going to be good futures for them,” said Coach Gray. “We also have some older kids who have been putting in just as much time as the kids that do get a lot of time and they deserve to get opportunities like this as well.”

“It’s good to get those kids in and get them opportunities to possibly get in the scoring column which I think most of kids did today,” Gray added, “so that’s a good thing to get everybody involved and those kids put in a lot of time as well.”

Downing led Tri-Village and all scorers with a game high 22-points.
