Ten to compete for Miss Annie Oakley title

GREENVILLE—Ten Darke County girls will be in contention for the title of Miss Annie Oakley Shooting Contest later this month at the south end of the Darke County Fairgrounds.

This contest, sponsored by the Annie Oakley Center Foundation, is open to young ladies between the ages of 12 and 19.

The girls will be competing in a shooting match involving balloons and a BB gun. The contest starts at 25 feet away from the balloon target and proceeds at five-foot increments after each round until a winner is determined both nights. The preliminaries will be held July 27 and the finals on July 28, both starting at 6 p.m.

Also to be featured the first night of competition will be the Annie Oakley costume competition among the shooting contestants.

Girls competing and their sponsors are as follows (alphabetically): Brooklyn Dillman, Drew’s Automotive; Lexi Dillman, Dillman’s Auto; Lona Dillman, One Shot Recycling; Miriam Evans, Abel’s Barber Shop in Ansonia; Naomi Evans, Ansonia Lumber Co.; Isabella Gulley, Fun Bunch 4-H Club; Alexa Robinson, Gregory Peck Sound; Madison Werner, J&M Ranch; and Lauren Wright and Rachael  Wright, both sponsored by the Wright family.
Dennis and Shellie Soward are in charge of this event.

Also on Wednesday night, the Lil’ Miss Annie Oakley and Lil’ Mr. Buffalo Bill pageants will be held on the grounds nearby. Eligible are children 3 to 5 years of age. Registration is at 4 and the contest begins at 6.

Annie Oakley Days is set for July 29-31 at the Darke County Fairgrounds and promises to be a fun-filled weekend with such activities including contests, cowboy mounted shooting all three days, square dancing, a melodrama, contests for young and old, and even for four-legged friends, with small dog races slated July 31.

And, the Annie Oakley Car Show is set for July 31 at the fairgrounds.
