Arcanum's Taylor Gray scores 31-points to put her over the 1,000 point career scoring mark in win over the Lady Eagles
EATON – The Arcanum Lady Trojans, the State’s No. 3 OHSAA DIII team took its 14-1 record on the road and came home with a convincing 68-26 non-conference win over the Eaton Lady Eagles to up its season record to 15-1.
Taylor Gray’s 1,000th career point to high-lighted the Lady Trojans win over the DII Lady Eagles as the senior scorched the nets for 31-points in the win.
“It’s just a matter if she wants to do it or puts her mind to it and that is the Taylor we have had all year,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore.
Eaton matched up well in the opening quarter holding Arcanum to 11-points while scoring 9-points for an Arcanum 11-9 lead with a quarter in the book. Hailey Unger paced the Lady Trojans with 6-points, Gray 3-points and Meghan McCans added 2-points.
“It was a different matchup for us so it took a little bit to figure that out,” Moore stated. “We needed to figure out what lineup we needed on the floor at what times.”
Arcanum exploded for 25 second quarter points behind the inside scoring of Gray’s 13 points including 3-3 at the charity stripe, McCans and Madelyn Fearon each buried two 3-pointers while holding Eaton to 6-points sending the teams to the break with the Lady Trojans leading 36-15.
The Arcanum girls took the third quarter 21-8 with Unger scoring 11-points including a trey and 2-2 at the line, Gray with 7-points and an Emilie Fout 3-pointer.
“We were able to wear them down and it started with defense when we went on that run,” said Coach Moore. “It was defense making the plays that led to easy transition points and that got us rolling. That is where we have the success.”
Gray entered the game needing 30-points to reach 1,000 and took the floor in period No. 4 with 993-points. With a lopsided score and a running clock time was quickly passing but by midway through the final period, Gray canned her 12th basket of the night to go along with 6-free throws to give her 7-points in the opening four minutes of fourth quarter action for her 1,000th career point bringing the game to a halt as Coach Moore presented the game ball to Gray who in turn ran into the stands to present the ball to her parents.
Having been fouled on the basket, Gray retuned to the court to sink her seventh free throw of the night for her 1,001st point before retiring to the bench along with all the Lady Trojans starters.
The final period went to Arcanum by an 11-3 score giving the Lady Trojans a 42-point win. Gray accounted for eight fourth quarter points and Emilie Fout nailed her second triple of the night.
“Everybody stepped up tonight,” Moore said. “Emilie Fout had some big shots tonight and gained some confidence. Kaitlyn Toy always comes up with those big rebounds and comes out of nowhere. That effort and that determination with her has shown through this season and looking forward to what those two can bring to the team.”
Gray led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 31-points.
