Sutherland rape trial day 1

GREENVILLE— With the jury selected, the state read its opening statement in a rape trial on Monday morning in Darke County Common Pleas Court. Judge Jonathan P. Hein presided, with Darke County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Deborah Quigley and the defendant’s attorney Mark Wieczorek present.

Jeffrey S. ‘Scott’ Sutherland, 33, of Greenville, appeared in court today on three counts of rape, all first-degree felonies and one count of disseminating a minor, a fourth-degree felony. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.

In her opening statement, Prosecuting Attorney Quigley alleged that Sutherland raped and inappropriately touched an 8-year-old family member multiple times while they were in his care.

The state began its case with three witnesses including the victim, and the victim’s family members Samarra Sucharda and Joetta Weaver.

Court will reconvene at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday with more state witnesses. Due to subject matter, there will be no livestream during the trial.
