Smash It Demolition Derby a Hit at Fair

2022 Great Darke County Fair Smash It Demolition Derby packs Grand Stand

DARKE COUNTY – The 2021 Great Darke County Fair came to a close Saturday night before a packed Smash it Demolition Derby crowd both in the grandstand and the trackside bleachers in the pits. Prior to the main event, the evening began with a kids Power Wheels Demolition Derby.

More than 200 competitors took to the muddy grandstand infield in hopes of being the last car running and earn a cash payout on the night while local fire firefighters stationed themselves off to the side of the ring in case of emergency.

Longtime event organizer and 21-year fair board member, Dave Niley was noticeably absent from the annual Smash It Demolition Derby. Niley was first elected to the fair board in 2001 and has a continuous 21-year run on the board that will conclude his fair board run this year.

“This was Dave’s event and it is one event that was always successful,” said fair board member Dudley Lipps. “It’s a big packed house, it’s sold out and there’s a lot of cars in the infield, a lot of people and the last night of the fair.”

“Dave is going to be missed big time,” Lipps concluded. “It takes a lot of people to fill his shoes.”
