Rain, a Rout, and a Replacement

Man, did it ever rain hard over the weekend! I had 3.8” in the rain gauge on our patio—only things that were missing were some Siamese and Golden Labs. The farmers will have a few days off from the fields to rest and repair won’t they?

GHS junior golfer Kenna Jenkinson, in her second state tournament at the OSU Gray Course this past weekend, finished in a tie for 20th in D-I with two rounds of 76. Her score would have placed her 4th in D-II so that means she ranked in the top 25 girl golfers in the state. Knowing her work ethic I think it’s safe to say that she’ll improve her standing as a senior next fall! Congratulations on another great season!

How about those Bengals!?! Joe Burrow and company completely dominated the highly regarded Ravens 41-17 in Baltimore Sunday to take over the AFC Central lead. Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and a vastly improved defensive unit contributed mightily to an all-around excellent team effort.

With the hapless Jets next on the schedule, the Stripes have a good chance to start the season 6-2, equaling the total wins for Coach Zac Taylor’s first two years at the helm.

Meanwhile the Browns, missing their entire starting offensive backfield and both tackles, pulled out a win over the Broncos Thursday night with veteran Case Keenum calling signals. The Browns are now 4-3 with a date at home this Sunday with the Steelers.

The two Ohio squads meet for the first time this fall on November 7th down on the riverfront, a game that will have more significance that the past few seasons!

Four county football teams start state playoff action this Saturday night at 7:00 with Versailles hosting Cincinnati Summit Country Day in D-V while Arcanum entertains Fort Recovery in D-VI. In D-VII play Ansonia is on the road at St. Henry while Cincinnati Christian Academy travels to New Madison to tangle with the Patriots of Tri-Village. Let’s get out and support these teams as they start down the playoff trail!!

Greenville’s Wave finished the season at 2-8 but other than the Piqua game were in a position in the fourth quarter of every other game to have a good chance to pull off a win. Coach Bart Schmitz will say goodbye to the senior class but have some outstanding underclassmen returning next fall.

Seniors of note departing are quarterback Hayden Bush who threw for 989 yards with a 54% completion rate; receiver Million Bryant with 35 receptions and 3 TDS; defensive back Dominick Baker who was third in the MVL with 3 interceptions; linebacker DJ Zimmer, defensive back and punter Nolan Curtis, receiver Alex Baumgardner, defensive back Michael Crampton, lineman Truman Nicholas, lineman Jordan Gump, and defensive back Jacob Barr.

Returnees will include kicker Avery Ernst who converted 21 of 24 extra point attempts and linebacker Ryan Crampton who led the MVL with 113 tackles including 48 solo stops. Junior Brock Short will be back after a tremendous season as the leading rusher in the MVL with 17 TDS and 1,627 yards including a school record 415 yards against Stebbins.

He fell just short of Zach Melling’s single season mark set in 2008 of 1,646 yards which saw Zach run for 22 TDS. Brock will have a really good chance to surpass Zach’s career record of 2,630 yards next fall if he stays healthy and a young offensive line continues to improve!

THE and UC both posted wins over the weekend, the Bucks overwhelming IU in Bloomington while the Bearcats survived a tougher than expected contest against Navy in Annapolis. Should both teams continue to win and make the playoffs could there possibly be a Battle of Ohio in the national semi-finals? A lot has to happen over the next seven or eight weeks to make that a reality but you never know!

Finally, who do you like in the World Series, the Braves or the Astros? Also, how about the fan who gave back the football that marked Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady’s 600th career touchdown pass? For a replacement game ball and a $1,000 gift card to the Buc’s team store the unidentified fan relinquished a ball that might have brought hundreds of thousands of dollars on the memorabilia market! Talk about a true fan! Until next time, stay healthy and active!
