Preble Shawnee Lady Arrows and Arcanum Lady Trojans set to meet in OHSAA DIII tournament action

COVINGTON – The Preble Shawnee Lady Arrows earned a comeback win over the National Trail Lady Blazers 58-44 in OHSAA DIII tournament action.

“Like with the previous game with Versailles, Preble Shawnee had to battle back from early double digit deficit in the opening round of tournament play to defeat National Trail and live for another day.

“Same thing,” said Preble Shawnee coach, Maggie Neanen. “When we got down I got a little more nervous this time just because Liv (Thompson) and Cam (Campbell Jewell) again didn’t score and they are predominantly leading scorers but I knew we would have a little bit of fight again but I was pretty hesitant on the beginning – but they were just nervous.”

Trail bolted out to an early lead taking the opening period 13-7 led by Micaiah Byrd’s 5-points including a 3-pointer, Jenna Petitt 4-points, and J’Da Jackson and Skyler Ward each with 2-points. Korrie Woodard paced the Lady Arrows with 6-points with both coming by way of 3-poitners and Liv Thompson added a free throw.

Preble Shawnee battled back to earn its first lead of the night at 20-19 with 2:10 on the second quarter clock where the score would stand at the break.

Woodard and Kahlen Kulms each accounted for 4-points, Thompson drilled a 3-pointer and Harlee Howard added a 2-point basket to round out Preble Shawnee scoring. Ward added 3-points for Trail, Jackson 2-points and Byrd 1 point.

Kahlen (Klums) is really coming along,” Coach Neanen said of her 6’1” sophomore post player. “They did not see her the first time around when we played them but she has really stepped up the last five or six games – again, playing Tri-Village really helped.”

The Lady Arrows were three better in the third 15-12 sending the game to the final period with Preble Shawnee holding a 35-31 lead.

Howard paced the Lady Arrows with 6-points, Thompson 5-points including a trey and Kulms added 4-points. Ward led Trail with 4-points including a triple, Natalie Osswald hit a 3-pointer, Jackson 3-points and Byrd added a basket.

Preble Shawnee put the game away in the fourth using a double digit 23-13 score for a 14-point win and earn the right to advance and take on the Arcanum Lady Trojans.

Howard led Shawnee with 7 fourth quarter points including a trey, Woodard 6-points including 4-4 at the line, Thompson 4-points and 2-2 at the charity stripe, Kulms 4-points and Campbell Jewell 2-2 at the line.

“Campbell is one of our normal leading scorers – she didn’t score her first bucket until those free throws in the fourth but she created and played phenomenal defense,” said Neanen. “We showed we can do things without Campbell scoring.”

With the win Preble Shawnee earned the right to advance in tournament play and take on the Arcanum Lady Trojans.

“Arcanum is tough,” Coach Neanen stated. “We know we have an uphill battle and I definitely think we are a better team than we were – they were our third game of the season, granite, they are just as good but it definitely will be a battle.”

Woodard led Preble Shawnee and all scorers with a game high 16-points.
