Life's Reflections
Twelve couples competed Friday night at the Ansonia American Legion at its own version of “The Newlywed Game.”
Scott “Scotty P.” Pfledderer was the entertaining game show host and emcee, while Angie Minnich took score.
The television game show had its start in 1966 with Bob Eubanks as game show host, and he served in that post until 1974. He also appeared on the show 1977–80, 1985–88, 1997–99 and 2009–10 on special episodes). Others who took on that role in later shows were Jim Lange (1984), Paul Rodriguez (1988–89), Gary Kroeger (1996–97) Carnie Wilson (2009–10) and Sherri Shepherd (2010–13).
Before each round begins, couples are called to their seats where the rules are explained and either the wives or husbands leave the room first, leaving their spouses or partner behind to answer questions that are asked of them. Then, those who were secluded elsewhere (on the bar side of the Legion) joined their mates back out on the set and gave their answers to the same question; hence, that’s where the points come in.
Four couples were featured in each of the three rounds in the Ansonia Legion version.
Competing in round 1 were Dan and Lisa Lockhart, Janet and Dave Webb, Brad and Laura Shafer and Troy and Janet Kammer. It resulted in a tie with the Webbs and Shafers having nine points apiece. They were then given one last question for the tie-breaker, and the Webbs won and were the only couple throughout the evening with a perfect score of 10.
In the second round, couples competing were Tyler and Teresa Fritz; Maria Blakeley and Kyle Yount; Kent and Julie Kimmel; and Jason and Kelly Menchhofer, with the Kimmels scoring eight points.
Couples in the third round were Scott and Sophie Nieport, Shane and Tess Clark, Gary and Susie Francis and T.J. and Kami Phlipot, with the Francises scoring nine points.
Each of the three winning couples were presented with a $100 gift certificate.
The Webbs have been together for 28 years and married for 26, while the Kimmels and the Francises have each been married for 37 years.
Believe me, folks, it was an enjoyable meeting. The longer it went on, the more entertaining it became.
And, we all got to familiarize ourselves with the contestants by listening to their answers right or wrong.
Jamie and I extend our condolences to the families of Wanda Brewer, Mary Alice Faller, Ocellia “Ozzie” Coby, Donald Aberle Jr., and Michael J. Bowers,
