Back-to-back run rule wins over Sidney secures Greenville Lady Wave Miami Valley League Championship
GREENVILLE – The Greenville Lady Wave won the 2022 Miami Valley League Championship outright in convincing fashion with back-to-back 13-2 and 12-1 run rule Wednesday night wins over the Sidney Lady Yellow Jackets softball team.
“A great day for the kids to cap out the MVL season,” said Greenville Coach Jerrod Newland. “Proud of the stadium today, proud of the atmosphere, fun things and got two more wins over Sidney to cap out the league at 17-1 and get two run rules here today against a DI team.”
“Congratulations to Coach Newland, the entire coaching staff and all the young ladies,” said Greenville City Schools Superintendent Doug Fries. “They once again represented us very well – they are just a pleasure to watch and a force to deal with.”
“It’s awesome,” said Greenville Athletic Director Aaron Shaffer. “The girls again have had a great season. They are always looking to improve, I’m sure they would tell you they can do better but at the end of the day they’re 2022 MVL Champions in softball and speaks of their hard work and the coaching that goes into it. I just want to say thanks to all our girls and coaches for the hard work and dedication to Green Wave – it’s a great job.”
The Lady Wave took a 1-0 lead after one-inning of play with Sidney plating a run in the top of the second bringing the Lady Wave to the plate in the bottom of the inning with the score knotted a 1-1.
Greenville regained the lead with 2-runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back sending 4-runs home in the third-inning and putting the game away in the bottom of the fourth scoring 5-runs for a run rule 12-1 win.
Coach Newland summoned Zoey Burns to the mound with bases loaded with 1-out in the top of the third and the freshmen hurler wasted little time throwing back-to-back strikeouts standing three Sidney runners.
Burns earned the win in relief tossing 2.2 innings of no-hit shut-out ball allowing 1-walk while striking out five. Kylie Hamm pitched 2.2 innings.
“That first game we really passed the bat nice,” Coach Newland said.
