Greenville Lady Wave advance to District Championship with 6-0 win over Valley View Lady Spartans
BELLBROOK – The Greenville Lady Wave advanced to the OHSAA DII District title game with a 6-0 win over the Valley View Lady Spartans and gives the Lady Wave and Coach Jerrod Newland another 25-win season.
“It’s good for the kids and the program – 25-and-5 here and just excited for the kids here today,
Newland said. “We played scratch-free defense, didn’t make an error and got what we needed to get done here today.”
“Three or four kids stepped up and had timely hits and we’re moving to the next one,” Newland continued. “So nice being at Newton High School Friday. “We’ve made the 90-mile drive numerous times and we’ll do that next week but it’s nice to go 20 and let somebody else go 90.”
Valley View was coming off a 27-0 run rule tournament win over Stivers while the Lady Wave entered the night with back-to-back run rule tournament victories over Trotwood-Madison (14-0) and Ponitz (15) in games Coach Jerrod Newland rested his eight Lady Wave starters in both contests.
The Lady Wave took an early 2-0 lead after one-inning of play and tacked on a second-inning run while keeping Valley View off the board to lead 3-0.
“In the first-inning Zoey (Burns) steps up with two outs and hits one off the fence (first pitch),” Newland stated. “She’s pretty good, she’s ready to go, she hit the ball square. Susie (Blocher) hit the ball square twice – they made both plays, Zim (Ashlyn Zimmer) hit it once and Burke hit it square.”
The teams played scoreless ball in innings three and four with Greenville battling back to dent the plate for a single run in the bottom of the fifth and scoring 2-runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn a 6-0 Sectional Title.
Lady Wave freshman Zoey Burns went the distance on the mound allowing no runs, 2-hits, 1-walk while striking out six.
Addie Burke paced Greenville at the plate going 3-3 including a double and 1-RBI. Burns went 2-3 with a double and 2-RBIs and Skylar Fletcher was 1-3 with a walk, 2-RBIs and a run.
“Great offensive kid and she does it the right way and hits the ball hard.” Coach Newland said of his sophomore, Addie Burke. “She has been put in the lineup here the last three or four games and seizes her opportunity. She is part of that sophomore class with a lot of kids and a lot of neat stuff but Addie Burke hits the ball solid and square and I love what she brings to the table for us the last few games.”
Alaina Baugh went 2-3, Bri Fellers was 1-3 with a RBI; Ashlyn Zimmer knocked a double to go 1-4 with a run; Avery Baumann a run; Skylar Bryson 2-runs and Ella Stebbins a run scored.
The Lady Wave played error free ball while the Lady Spartans committed three errors.
“Scratch free game,” Newland noted. “We didn’t make any errors, they made three and bottom line, six-zip Greenville and I’ll take that any day.”
Greenville advances to the DII District Championship game taking on the Cleves Taylor Lady Lady Yellow Jackets; 5-2 Tuesday night winners over Hamilton Ross in a Friday night matchup at Newton High School with a 5:00 p.m. start time.
The game will be a rematch of the 2019 District Championship game; a game the Lady Wave defeated Taylor 2-0 to advance to the Regionals.
“Just excited for the opportunity to move to the next one and the next one will be at Newton High School – I am just glad we go 20-miles instead of 90,” Coach Newland concluded. “Gold Medal Friday coming up – just keep working hard.”
