Arcanum Lady Trojans advance with 54-point OHSAA DIII tournament win over the Northridge Lady Polar Bears

COVINGTON – The Arcanum Lady Trojans wasted little time advancing on the OHSAA DIII tournament trail with a convincing 64-10 win over the Northridge Lady Polar Bears.

Arcanum raced out to a 21-0 first quarter lead over the Dayton school. Hailey Unger led the Lady Trojans with 6-points, Meghan McCans hit for 5-points including a 3-pointer, Madelyn Fearon added 4-points and Ellie Fout, Kaitlyn Toy and Kylee Freeman each chipped in a 2-point bucket.

“Defense was a big focus of ours,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore, “coming out and being solid on the defensive end and getting into that game the way we want to play.”

Period No. 2 went to Arcanum 20-8 sending the teams to the break with the Lady Trojans extending its lead to 41-8.

Unger paced Arcanum with 8-points in the second including 2 treys, Fearon 7-points and McCans 5-points including a 3-pointer.

Coach Moore backed it down in the third taking the quarter 16-0 sending the game to the final period with Arcanum up 57-8. Fearon scored 6-points, Emilie Fout 5-points including a triple, Unger 4-points and Ellie Fout added a free throw.

Period No. 4 had Coach Moore putting on the brakes even more as no Lady Trojans starter would see the court in the final period with Arcanum using a 7-2 fourth for a 54-point win. Alexis Gibbons scored 5-points including a 3-pointer and 2-2 at the charity stripe and Hannah Rademachir went 2-2 at the free throw line.

Arcanum senior guard, Madelyn Fearon led the Lady Trojans in rebounding as Arcanum once again without the services of senior starting post player, Taylor Gray.

“We want to value every possession,” Moore said. “Offensive boards we struggled all year so that was a goal that we set at the beginning of the game – to try and score every possession because we know not every shot is going to go in so to be aggressive on those offensive boards.”

“Madelyn led us in rebounds tonight – that’s just being gritty for somebody of her size,” added Moore. “That just shows her heart and determination of wanting to get that ball.”

Next up for Arcanum is the Preble Shawnee Lady Arrows, Saturday, February 19 at Covington with a 7:30 p.m. start time.

“It’s going to be a battle, we have to be ready, we have to be focused, we have to healthy and we have to come out and play our basketball,” Coach Moore said of the upcoming game. “We have to be ready for it.”

Arcanum defeated Preble Shawnee 67-43 in an earlier season WOAC matchup.

Unger led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 18-points, Fearon added 17-points in the win.
