Franklin Monroe Lady Jets win in five sets over Lady Blackhawks

PITSBURG – The Franklin Monroe Lady Jets defeated the visiting Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks 3-2 in Thursday night WOAC varsity volleyball action at the Hanger.

“What an incredible game,” said FM coach, Angie Filbrun. “I knew it was going to be a battle.”

“Really proud of my girls,” first year MV coach, Nancy Whitted said. “They stuck in and they didn’t give up.”

Franklin Monroe jumped out to a 1-0 lead winning the opening set 25-12 in what looked like what would be an easy night for the Lady Jets.

Set No. 2 had the score seesawing back and forth with the Lady Blackhawks coming out on top with a hard fought 31-29 win to even the score at 1-1.

“We came out firing and then, my goodness, they came back and they gave us a run for our money,” Filbrun noted.

The Lady Jets got the lead back at 2-1 with a 25-22 third set win followed with Mississinawa Valley knotting the score at 2-2 with a 25-19 fourth set win.

Franklin Monroe took an early fifth set lead and held on for a 15-12 win and take the match 3-2.

“We practice hard and have some talent,” Whitted said. “Got some kids that really want to learn so I think we are going to be successful pretty soon.”

“Excellent game all the way around,” said Coach Filbrun. “Both teams worked so hard. My swingers were hitting so hard and their defense – they were picking up everything; props to them.”

With the win Franklin Monroe improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Lady Hawks stand at 1-4 and 0-2 on the young season.
