Lady Jets fall to Yellow Spring

COVINGTON – A young Franklin Monroe volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to the Yellow Spring Lady Bulldogs in tournament play bringing the Lady Jets season to a close.

“We have amazing kids,” Franklin Monroe coach, Angie Filbrun said following the match. “My kids went out there and they worked hard and they wanted to work together.”

“All the things we talk about all year – our mission as a program is to dream small and that is to take care of the little things, whether it’s take care of the little things on the floor or just in life general,” Filbrun continued. “I feel like we do that and we have done a really good job of that.”

The Lady Jets trailed 10-6 early in the opening set before scoring 4-unanswered points to knot the score at 10-10. Yellow springs answered with a 15-7 scoring run to close out the set with a 25-17 win over the young Lady Jets team.

Franklin Monroe battled back in the second set with the score tied at 2-2, 4-4, 5-5 and the Lady Jets taking a 7-5 lead. The DIV teams battle to ties at 8-8, 10-10, 11-11, 12-12 and 13,13 only to have the Lady Bulldogs take advantage of a 6-0 run to lead 19-13 on their way to a 25-17 second set win.

Set No. 3 had Yellow Springs jumping out to a 7-1 advantage. The Lady Jets reeled off 10-unanswered points to take an 11-10 lead bringing a timeout from the Lady Bulldogs bench.

The teams played to ties at 11-11, 12-12, 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20 before Yellow Springs would close out the night on a 5-2 run to advance in tournament play.

“This is not just about coaching volleyball – this is about building young ladies to create relationships and go on and do big things in life,” Coach Filbrun said following the team’s last match of the season. “I feel like we have done that this year. The kids have really bought in and they worked hard and I can’t ask for anything else – it just wasn’t our day.”

Franklin Monroe’s lone senior, No. 7 Skylar Bauman played her final game for the Blue and White volleyball program.

“Skylar played varsity for us for three years and was a setter for three years,” said Filbrun. “She did an excellent job. She did everything she could tonight, she works super hard – it’s really emotional because she is my niece.”

“We have good things to look forward to,” concluded Filbrun, “so I am thankful for Skylar and all the good things she gave our program and we’re moving forward.”
