Three Lady Blackhawks hit double figures in lopsided non-conference win over Troy Christian
UNION CITY – With two players unable to go, the Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks took to the court Monday night and handily defeat the visiting Troy Christian Lady Eagles 51-22 in a non-conference varsity basketball game.
“We had a good showing tonight,” said MV coach, Michael Paige. “I love our energy especially on defense.”
“We were missing a couple of girls tonight,” continued Paige. “Brenna Price, one of our starters was sick today and we were missing Braxton Trump as well. Both of them are varsity players and play a lot during our games. Once we get those two back our defense will pick up even more.”
Mississinawa Valley took a 14-1 lead after one period of play getting balance offensive play with five Lady Hawks getting in the scoring column including five Kennedy Stachler points coming by way of a 3-pointer and 2-point basket.
The Lady Eagles battled back to match the Lady Hawks 12-point second quarter sending the non-conference matchup to the halftime break with MV holding a double digit 28-14 advantage. Freshman Taylee Woodbury and Jocelyn Hoggatt paced the Lady Hawks with 5-points each including both knocking down a trey.
“Taylee Woodbury doesn’t get tired – that’s the good thing,” Coach Paige said of his freshman. “She can play – she is definitely going to be special.”
MV outpaced the visitors 13-4 in period No. 3 led by two Mattie Hiestand triples sending the game to the final quarter with the Lady Hawks leading 41-17.
The Lady Blackhawks doubled up on Troy Christian 10-5 in the final period to earn a 29-point margin of victory.
After a three year absence, Coach Paige returns to lead the Lady Blackhawks program and is pleased with what he views ahead.
“No – no I didn’t,” Paige said when asked if he knew what he had to work with for the 2021-22 season. “I knew they had some talent and I knew they were aggressive but then I heard about the incoming freshmen class after I got the job. Then once I saw them – oh my goodness, they’re special. This freshman class is really good.”
I think we are going to surprise “some people,” Coach Paige concluded.
