Jets earn New Year’s Day win over Patriot Prep

Shorthanded Franklin Monroe Jets win big over the Columbus Patriot Preparatory Academy Eagles

CANAL WINCHESTER – The Franklin Monroe Jets took a two hour New Year’s Day bus ride east of Columbus and came home with a 52-33 win over the Patriot Preparatory Academy Eagles.

“It was a good trip,” said Franklin Monroe coach, Troy Myers. “It was a little bit like a tournament atmosphere. You’re going so far away to play, different gym, different team but our guys were prepared and obviously got the job done.”

The Jets accepted an invitation to play at Canal Winchester’s Harvest Prep’s New Year’s Day Bash with multiple games played throughout New Year’s Day in what Coach Myers stated is similar to Flyin to the Hoop held each year at Kettering’s Trent Arena.

Franklin Monroe took the court shorthanded playing without the services of two of the team’s regular starters.

“We played without Ethan Garber who was with family in Kansas, we played without Gabe Sargent who is still battling his shoulder,” Myers noted. “Blake Addis had just come off of concussion protocol the previous day so a lot of guys that don’t get a ton of minutes played quite a bit and did really well.”

The Jets jumped out to a 13-4 lead after one quarter of play with Jayce Byers hitting a 3-pointer and a basket for 5-points and Ky Cool and Blake Addis each chipping in two buckets for 4-points each.

“We jumped on them early which was good for us because we play a lot better with a lead,” Myers said.   “We got on them early and maintained that lead once we got ahead.”

Period No. 2 went to Franklin Monroe by a 12-8 score sending the teams to the break with the Jets leading with a 25-12 double digit advantage. Addis paced FM with 4-points, Byers and Landon Keller each canned a 3-pointer and Cade Peters wen 2-2 at the charity stripe.

“We were up at half and we sustained that lead,” said Myers. “Our pressure and our aggressiveness in the first half really set the tone – our kids know that’s how we have to play. We have to create some opportunities for our self and they did that.”

The third quarter had the Jets outscoring the Eagles 13-9 led by Keller’s 4-points including 2-2 at the line, Rumble 3-points and a bucket each from Cool, Peters, and Byers.

“I was nervous about it,” Coach Myers said of playing on New Year’s Day. “It was a one o’clock game so our bus left at 8:30 a.m. and that’s after New Year’s Eve, so you know kids are staying up but they were fantastic. I don’t know what they did Friday night but they were ready to play on Saturday.”

The Jets made it a clean sweep winning the fourth quarter 14-12 to give the Jets the win and an enjoyable two hour bus ride home. Cool, Keller and Cason Yount each contributed 4-points in the final quarter and Peters added a basket to earn the Jets a 19-point road win.

And the bus ride home … “A two hour drive is a lot better when you win for sure,” Coach Myers said with a chuckle. “It was very good.”

“Landon Keller was name MVP for the game – Landon had a good game and led our team in points,” stated Coach Myers. “Ky had a really good game. Ky played really well. Ky had 11-rebounds and 5-steals and across the board he was really involved.”

“Jayce played really well, was very active defensively,” continued Myers. “Blake played well coming right off a concussion. He was really active on the glass and got some easy buckets inside. It was a collective effort but those guys in particular really stepped up.”

Keller led the Jets and all scorers with a game high 11-points with FM getting balanced scoring from seven players.

The Franklin Monroe JV squad earned a 4-point win in the early game.

“Our JV’s played at 11:30 a.m. in different gym,” noted Coach Myers. “They really were ready – they were awake so I give them a lot of credit. No matter what they did … they were ready to play at the time we had to play.”
