Greenville’s Jenkinson competes well at State

Kenna Jenkinson ties for 20th at OHSAA Division I girls state golf tournament.

COLUMBUS – Greenville’s Kenna Jenkinson played in the Division I State Golf Tournament at The Ohio State Golf Course on Friday October 22nd and Saturday the 23rd with the girls playing the Gray course and the boys competing on the Scarlet course.

Jenkinson got a practice round of golf in on Thursday leading up to the weekend state tournament.

“This helps the players get used to the yardages which are longer than they play all year,” said Greenville Lady Wave golf coach, Tracy Haines. “It also helps them get familiar with the greens. The players spend a lot of their allotted practice time on the greens. The greens have a lot of break and not easy to read.”

Jenkinson started on Hole 10 in Friday competition and was hitting the ball very well on the day.

“Kenna hit most fairways and greens in regulation,” Haines said. “She had trouble putting and could not get the birdie putts to drop.”

The Greenville junior had 37 putts on Friday and played well enough to start on Hole 1 on Saturday tied for 20th place.

Jenkinson was not hitting the ball as well Saturday but did a great job of scrambling to save several pars and putted much better as she only had 30 putts on the day.

Jenkinson saved her best for last finishing hole 18 with a great approach shot and making a birdie.

“It was a great way to end a tough day,” Coach Haines said, “and will be a good memory to carry into next year.”

Jenkinson finished tied for 20th after two days on The Ohio State Golf Course and was only six shots out of the top 10 this year while bettering her 36th place state finish last year at Columbus.

“I am very proud of Kenna and all the girls for the work they put in this season,” said Haines. “Kenna is already making plans for how to improve and get back to State next year.”

“Kenna, the team, and I would like to thank the City of Greenville for the banners on the city building,” said Coach Haines.

Jenkinson shot a 76 both Friday and Saturday.
