Ohio National Guard honors two Greenville Senior High School Student Athletes
GREENVILLE – Greenville High School seniors, Carmen Badell and Jack Marchal were honored as Scholar Athletes at halftime of the Green Wave’s home football game by the US Army’s Ohio National Guard.
Staff Sgt. Keller made the halftime presentations to Badell and Marchal with each recipient having their names placed on a plaque given to GHS and accepted by Greenville Senior High School Principal, Mr. Stan Hughes.
“We are presenting two Greenville High School scholar athletes for their on and off the field values we hold within the Army,” said Staff Sgt. Keller. “Those values are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. They have shown throughout the classroom and through their athletic accomplishments that they are deserving of this award.”
“Sergeant Keller approached me to see if we could start a scholar athlete program at Greenville High School where we would recognize someone from each of the seasons that we have scholar athletes,” Hughes stated. “Anytime we get a chance to recognize our great kids, we are going to do that – that’s a given.”
“Secondly, Sgt. Keller has the seven values of the National Guard and he starts ticking them off for me and he tells me all of those wonderful things – and we have plenty of kids that fit that.”
“Mr. Shaffer (Greenville Athletic Director) and I got together and said – ‘who do we want to pick.’ He had a couple students in mind and we had the same two kids in mind – Jack Marchal and Carmen Badell.”
Marchal is a member of the Greenville varsity boy’s golf team and Badell plays for the Lady Wave varsity volleyball team. The two GHS seniors each received an Ohio National Guard camouflaged backpack.
“We gave them the names and now Sgt. Keller is here to recognize our great kids for doing really great things, being great leaders, great academicians and great athletes in our building,” Hughes said. “It’s a wonderful thing to see our kids be recognized for the good things they do.”
