Greenville gets one of many sacks in scrimmage at Celina.

Greenville scrimmages well at Celina

Greenville plays well on both sides of the ball in the Wave's first football scrimmage of the season at Celina.

CELINA – The Greenville Green Wave high school football team traveled to Celina to take on the Bulldogs in a Saturday morning scrimmage and came away with a good feeling about the upcoming 2021 OHSAA football season.

“I’m excited with where we are at,” Greenville head varsity coach, Bart Schmitz said following the scrimmage. “You never satisfied with where you’re at but coming into this scrimmage after we didn’t get to do one last year, it was nice to come up here, a lot of history with Greenville and Celina on this field way back, but I am excited with where at and we have to fix our mistakes and move forward.”

The Wave took advantage of excellent offensive line play giving Greenville a strong running game moving the ball up and down the field while the Bulldogs spent most of the morning going to the air.

“Our offensive line did an excellent job today keeping Hayden upright and giving our running backs holes,” Schmitz stated. “We were able to run the ball pretty much whenever we wanted to.”

In the final two drives of the day, Greenville marched down the field to score on both drives with Brock Short scampering for a 60-yard run before capping off the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.

“Brock is a great running back,” said Schmitz. “He can see the holes, if something’s not there he can make something happen. Our offensive line did an excellent job today keeping Hayden upright and giving our running backs holes because we could run the ball pretty much whenever we wanted to.”

The final drive of the day for the Wave ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Hayden Bush to Nolan Curtis with Curtis stretching out to get the ball over the goal line.

“You run the ball, run the ball, run the ball and all the sudden we come with our bootleg,” noted Schmitz. “Curtis makes a nice catch – he lowers his shoulder and gets in.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Green Wave used numerous sacks to keep the Bulldogs passing game on the run for much of the day.

“That is what we are trying to get accomplished this year – bring pressure, get the quarterbacks off their spot,” said Schmitz. “We have to continue to work on our coverage in the back end, clean up some things on our rushes but overall our defense was flying around the football field and it was good to see.”

By the end of the two-hour scrimmage, the Wave was still going strong while the home team’s endurance what beginning to wane.

“It’s like I said day one when I came here, run the Michigan and it works,” Schmitz said. “Those last two sets of down and distance it was ‘hey diddle diddle’ here we come and it was exciting to see our kids fly around – hard nose fast physical football.”
