The Green Wave tune up for Annual Jamboree vs Versailles with full-pad scrimmage at Celina

CELINA – The Greenville Green Wave traveled north for a 10 a.m. Saturday morning scrimmage with the Celina Bulldogs with the teams taking the field in full gear.

“It’s always nice to get the pads on,” said Greenville coach, Bart Schmitz. “We have some guys that are fighting for spots. Today was a good first step for them.”

Returning starting running back, Brock Short raced 61-yards on the Wave’s opening drive to kick start the 2022 Greenville scrimmage season and intercepted a Bulldogs’ pass later in the scrimmage.

“We had some kids step up,” Schmitz stated. “We had some minor injuries along the way so we held some kids out and some kids got some valuable playing time. It was a good scrimmage.”

Both teams moved the ball well at times and both defenses had their moments as well during the 90-minute scrimmage under soaring temperatures.

“There are always things to work on but overall I thought for the most part we blocked pretty well,” said Coach Schmitz. “Other than their one touchdown we tackled pretty well and that is what you look for right now – who wants to hit. We’ll watch some film, we’ll get better and we’ll get ready for the next one.”

The freshman squads closed out the day with Greenville moving the ball well.

“We have 26 freshmen this year, they’re young, some of them it’s their first time playing but when you have that many kids we’re able to do some things in practice,” Schmitz noted. “They are coming along   they looked pretty good today.”

With the high number of freshman on this season’s team, it opens the door for the possibility of some freshman games.

“We’re hopeful,” said Coach Schmitz. “Everybody has to stay healthy, nobody else can quit and we’ll see what we can do but that is the game plan right now – to be able to play some. Maybe not all of them but we’ll try to get some freshman or what we call a ‘JV B’ game.”

Greenville welcomes Versailles to the Annual Jamboree Football Scrimmage, Friday, August 12 with a 7 p.m. start time in the final tune-up before the start of the 2022 OHSAA football season. There is a $5.00 cash charge at the gate.
