“We’re ready – we’re excited,” Greenville coach, Bart Schmitz.
The Greenville Green Wave open the 2021 OHSAA football season under the lights with a Thursday Night Lights game with the visiting Eaton Eagles.
“We’re ready – we’re excited,” said Greenville coach, Bart Schmitz. “We have a lot of guys coming back in key position and we’ve found some young linemen. They are going to be able to step up and help us make plays.”
“The seniors have been working their tails off leading this team,” continued Schmitz. “We have been focusing on the fundamentals and getting back to what we do so I am excited to see what this team is capable of.”
It all starts up front with the line and Coach Schmitz is pleased with both sides of the line entering the season.
“Offensively we found our five guys and then DJ (Zimmer) at tight end when we need him,” Schmitz noted. “Defensively we have a rotation between seven or eight guys because a lot of the guys that play offensive line are also going to have to play some defense so they don’t have to be out on the field the whole game. We have a good mix right now if kids can do certain things for us. We just have to put them in places to be successful.”
The Miami Valley League once again will be stiff competition with Greenville playing in the Miami Division alongside Butler, Piqua, Tippecanoe and Troy.
Fairborn, Sidney, Stebbins, West Carrollton and Xenia make up the Valley Division of the MVL.
“The MVL is always great competition,” said Schmitz. “Piqua is going to be right up there with the amount of kids they have coming back and Troy is Troy. It will be interesting to see what this Stebbins team does. They return a lot of players off of a team that won a game in the playoffs last year so from where they went to where they’re at now – they’re getting that program down there going and any given week anybody can beat anybody.”
“The MVL as a whole right now, you have your really tough teams at the top but then its game on for everybody else,” Schmitz added.
Greenville opens the season at home this Thursday night, August 19 with a 7 p.m. start time with the TV cameras rolling, giving the entire Miami Valley an opportunity to watch the Green Wave take on the Eagles.
“It’s exciting to come out against Eaton,” Schmitz stated. “We’ve been going against them week one now every year since I’ve been here at Greenville. “It’s like we tell the kids, it’s a neat experience to be on television and show the community and the whole Dayton area what we have been working on up here but we have to forget about the distractions and the TV cameras don’t mean anything if you can’t out block them and you can’t out tackle them.”
