Greenville honors fall sports athletes

Lady Wave MVL Champions with 12-0 undefeated conference season.

GREENVILLE – Greenville Senior High School honored its fall sports athletes at the annual Fall Sports Awards night.

“It was nice to come back to our awards night in a more traditional sense with gathering all our teams together, families together in the gym and recognizing our individual accomplishments and our major team accomplishments,” said Greenville Athletic Director, Aaron Shaffer. “It is a bitter sweet night. You get to see kids get recognized for their hard work and their talents and their dedication but it also signifies the end of the fall season.”

“We had some tremendous outcomes this year with our girls golf being MVL Champions and the individual accomplishments of many kids – Kenna Jenkinson qualifying for state, Warren Hartzell qualifies as an individual for the district golf tournament, numerous school records broken, single game rushing record, career sack record, Libby McKinney has so dang many school records now with everything she’s done,” Shaffer added, “it’s just nice to watch our kids compete.”

The Lady Wave golf team earned the MVL Conference Championship trophy going undefeated in league play and junior Kenna Jenkinson was named MVL Girls Golf Athlete of the Year.

“It was amazing season because … Kenna is Kenna,” said Greenville Lady Wave golf coach, Tracy Haines. “She is going to shoot well all the time but Leah (Fry) and Trinity (Reis) really stepped it up this year. Trinity dropped five strokes from her average the prior year and Leah dropped three so that really helped us this year.”

“Xenia had a rebuilding year, they graduated a whole bunch of senior for them last year,. Troy is generally very good, Piqua is good, Butler is always good. Last year we lost to Butler and had to go to the fifth person and there were a couple matches we lost because we had to go to the fifth person so they are tough schools. We just happened to get better this year so we didn’t have to rely on the fifth person as much.”

“I kind of felt that way (target on the team’s back) at MVL – that everybody was gunning for us because we were undefeated so everybody was coming after us trying beat us at the MVL tournament but the girls did a great job and handled the pressure,” concluded Coach Haines, “and we got it done.”
