Greenville Girls Youth Basketball Camp Tops Century Mark

More than 100 girls attend Greenville Lady Wave youth basketball camp under the direction of Coach Rachael Kerns

GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave 2022-2023 basketball program hit the century mark once again hosting more than 100 girls at its three-day youth basketball camp for girls entering grades K-8 under the direction of veteran Greenville head coach Rachael Kerns.

“I don’t know how many years that is in a row now but it says a lot to what we’re doing here,” said Coach Kerns. “The biggest complement we get is so many of our kids come one year come back the next year. That is what we strive to do with our youth camp.”

The three-day camp included offensive and defensive drills as well as shooting and dribbling. Individual and team prizes were awarded in addition to a camp T-shirt for each camper.

“Have fun, just come and have fun,” Kerns said of the objective for the camp. “We want them to know its ok to not be good at everything but you can still work really hard at what we’re doing and then obviously fundamental things that we can get through better.”

The Lady Wave camp held three daily sessions including a morning session for girls entering sixth, seventh and eighth grade with the early afternoon sessions hosting incoming third, fourth and fifth graders and the final session of the day with the incoming kindergarten, first and second campers.

Coach Kerns was assisted by varsity assistant coach, Lindsey McGlinch; JV coach, Craig Reithman; freshman coach, Steve Liette; eight grade coach, Jeff Martin and Lady Wave basketball players.

“We are really fortunate because our numbers are great at the high school level,” Coach Kerns stated.    “We have 30-plus high school girls this year.”

Coach Kerns was quick to point out if a girl missed the camp they are encouraged to “come check out some games, come to camp next year, come be a part of something,” Kerns said.
