GREENVILLE—Fort Greenville DAR will host the Wreaths Across America mobile educational exhibit at The Great Darke County Fairgrounds on May 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The exhibit is a mobile unit that travels all over the United States and stops at chosen communities. Fort GreeneVille DAR was selected to host the exhibit for 2022.
The purpose of the event is to bring communities together to learn about the Wreaths Across America mission to remember the fallen, honor those who served, and teach our children the value of freedom, as well as to bridge the gap between active duty service members veterans and civilians. In addition, the exhibit teaches about patriotism, while remembering the services and sacrifices of our military members.
The mobile unit is a free public event including free parking. The exhibit has a theater, story boards and visuals, exterior visual displays, interactive computers and a staff conducting free tours. The staff will also “welcome home“ our Vietnam veterans as they tour the exhibit.
Local WAA co-coordinators (and DAR members) Debbie Nisonger and Chris Nehring feel it is such an honor to to be chosen to host the WAA mobile unit.
Other activities will be a vintage military vehicle display organized by local veteran Dave Miller of Versailles and the Darke County American Legions will have an open house at the fairgrounds’ Veterans Building. The Veterans Building displays military memorabilia donated by local Veterans.
For children 14 years old and below, Fort GreeneVille DAR is sponsoring a WAA coloring page contest. There will be pages and crayons provided for children to enter. Once colored, the child will be entered in a drawing at 4pm. There will be nine names drawn and don’t need to be present. The prizes are eight Greenville City Pool one-day pool passes (up to four people per pass) and one Darke County Parks summer camp pass.
In collaboration with Fort GreeneVille DAR, veterans receive a free meal with proof of service sponsored by the Darke County Veterans Services to the food trucks on premises. The food trucks in attendance are Buckeye Burger, Timeless Taco and What the Truck which will also be serving the public. A dining tent will be available and was sponsored by VFW Post 7262.
Local entertainer Nancy Livingston, will perform at 12:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs.
