Taylor Gray sets Arcanum all-time career kills record with 1,055th slam in Monday night win over Brookville.

ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans honored five seniors; Peyton Garbig, Ellie Fout, Taylor Gray, Alexis Wilcox and Madelyn Fearon prior to the team’s non-conference volleyball matchup with the Brookville Lady Blue Devils.

“It was awesome on senior night for my girls to come out with a win,” said Arcanum coach, Macey O’Dell.

Lady Trojans senior Taylor Gray established the school’s all-time career kill record with her 1,055th varsity slam in the second set of the night bringing the match to a halt while she was presented the game ball.

“I knew I was close but I didn’t know which ball it was,” Gray said following the match. “That was probably my best hit of the night and it was on senior night. I am pretty sure the pass (Alexis Wilcox) and set (Ellie Fout) both came from my senior teammates and that is just awesome. It was a great night.”

Gray surpasses Laci Burns career kills record of 1054 set from 2004-2007.

“My sister and I both had very high hopes for Taylor coming in as a freshman,” said Coach O’Dell. “We both thought she could be a tremendous outside-middle hitter. She has transformed into both – she’s just a great all-around player.”

Arcanum took an early first set 3-0 lead and pushed its advantage to 20-12 bringing a timeout from the Brookville bench. The Lady Blue Devils score the first point out of the timeout only to have the Lady Trojans use five unanswered points to close out the game with double digit 25-13 win.

Brookville stepped up play in set No. 2 with the game tied 12-times, the first at 1-1 and the last at 18-18 before Arcanum used a 6-0 run to lead 24-18.

The Lady Blue Devils scored two unanswered points to make it a 24-20 Arcanum lead when Taylor Gray took advantage of an Ellie Fout set to record her record breaking kill and give the Lady Trojans a second set 25-20 win and go up 2-0 on the night.

Arcanum jumped out to a 5-0 third set lead and came within 3-points of winning the match in straight sets leading 22-20 only to have the visitors string together 5-unanswered points a earn a third set 25-22 win and trail 2-1.

The Lady Trojans continued to struggle in the fourth set trailing 8-4 bringing an Arcanum timeout. Arcanum took its second timeout of the set trailing 22-17 and would close to within a point at 23-22, but it was Brookville soring the final two points sending the match to the fifth and deciding set with a 25-22 win.

Arcanum bolted out to a 5-0 advantage and pushed its lead to 13-6 on its way to a 15-9 fifth set win and a Senior Night 3-2 victory over Brookville.

“This is great tournament prep for us playing all these tougher teams,” Coach O’Dell said following the match.
