Greenville cross country team opens 2022 season with 7 a.m. Monday morning practice
GREENVILLE – The Greenville cross country team officially kicked off the 2022 season with a 7 a.m. practice in the Greenville City Park under the direction of veteran head varsity coach, Stephanie Lind.
Coach Lind welcomes a large group of freshman to the program along with some first time cross country runners.
“We have lots of freshmen out this year,” Lind said. “They are very excited for the season and to learn. We have quite a few brand new runners this year too that haven’t run cross country before.”
The 2022 Green Wave cross country schedule has the team competing in more local meets that in recent years.
“We are staying very local here this year,” explained Lind. “Our first invitational is Celina and then we will have Treaty (Treaty City Invitational). We also added Blackhawk (Chenoweth Trails) this year to our roster. We are going to do Tri-Village this year and Versailles so we are staying very local.”
Many of the cross country runners condition during the summer break while others prefer to wait for the start of the fall cross country season.
“We try to get them out running in the summer by having some fun events and groups that meet together,” said Lind. “That helps get some of the kids there. Some of the kids prefer to swim or ride a bike so I count some of those miles as summer run miles just to get them out and get them moving.”
“We do a couple of team 5Ks together but of course you always have those kids that want the summer off and that’s ok too,” Coach Lind added. “We try to break the kids up into groups so they can start where they are at and work with that. Usually everybody gets in shape pretty quick.”
The Green Wave cross country team most days can be seen running through the Greenville City Park and city streets preparing for the fall season.
