GREENVILLE – The Versailles Tigers made a visit to Greenville Senior High School Friday night for the team’s final tune-up before the start of the 2022 OHSAA football season.

Versailles looked in midseason form in the first half of play, coming off a 2021 State Championship while Greenville struggled to find the end zone.

“I thought our line blocked well, they executed their assignments pretty well, we were able to sustain blocks.” said Versailles coach, Ryan Jones. “I thought our running backs ran hard, they were able to break some tackles.”

Versailles put its points on the board in the first half before Greenville settled in playing solid defense in the second half.

“We have to figure out a way to come out of the gate stronger,” said Greenville coach, Bart Schmitz. “It took us it seemed like two quarters to get our feet under us and that is something we have to get better at.”

The varsity squads started off the evening followed by the junior varsity teams and the freshman programs closed out the night’s action.

Both schools graduated their starting quarterbacks along with other position and line players as the coaching staffs hone in on their starting lineups on both sides of the line.

“We’ll watch film, we’ll fix some things and move some people around and see what it is going to take for us to win some football games,” Coach Schmitz said.

Coach Jones understands the defending state champion Tigers will bring out the best in teams for the 2022 season.

“We’ll get their best shot,” Jones noted. “The biggest thing we can do is prepare those guys, coach them up, put them in the best chance we can schematically to succeed and get better as much as we can during the week. If we can improve every day during the week then that will put them in their best position they can be in to take those teams best shot.”

“We’ve been a team trying to knock off state champions and now we’re defending state champions so we’re in that position so we know what its like,” added Jones. “Teams are going to want to beat us, we’ll be ready but we know we’re going to have to play well – it just isn’t going to happen.”
