GGSA holds 50th Opening Day

Greenville Girls Softball Association opens 2022 season with 5oth Opening Day celebration

GREENVILLE – The Greenville Girls Softball Association (GGSA) celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a Sunday afternoon opening day ceremony.

GGSA President, Eric Fellers welcomed a large crowd to the day’s events followed with Marty McCabe of Fellowship of Christian Athletes opening with prayer.

Greenville American Legion Post 140 presented the Colors while Greenville freshman and current member of the Wavaires, Addy Gathard sand the National Anthem.

“Without you, the player, parent, coach, officer, and supporter, this organization would not be as strong today as it is,” said Fellers. “The Stebbins Field Complex and Lady Wave Stadium is a great example of what a community can do when the goals become very clear and the people with those goals come tighter to make those goals become reality.”

“It has taken 50 years  and many thousands of people selling fundraisers, running the concession stand, coaching bases, and dedicating many thankless hours of their time behind the scenes to give the young ladies of Greenville and beyond a positive softball experience,” added Fellers.

Fellers introduced veteran Lady Wave Softball coach, Jerrod Newland for some comments.

“Just a great day for GGSA,” Newland said. “It’s awesome how far it’s came in 50 years – to see all these people out here celebrating the kids and the future of this place.”

“It’s been here 50 years and I challenge what the next 50 brings because how awesome it’s been,” continued Coach Newland. “Most people out here, especially the kids don’t know that 20 years ago they were down on Ohio Street and that is just how far GGSA has come. I just look at every five years more and more gets added out here and the Board of Directors, the Trustees, the people out here – look at the great families and groups.”
