PITSBURG – Franklin Monroe honored their lone senior prior to a non-conference volleyball match with Houston. They would drop the match to the Wildcats 21-25, 11-25 and 22-25.
It wasn’t the outcome, or the way senior Skylar Bauman wanted to go out in her last home game … but one where she and her team went out fighting in the last set.
The Jets would go down early in the opening set but clawed back to a 13-13 tie before the Wildcats ran off 8 straight points.
The Jets managed to creep back into it trailing 23-21 before Houston finished the first set win 25-21.
In the second set it was all Houston firing on all cylinders while Franklin Monroe struggled to find any rhythm in their game and would fall 25-11.
FM jumped ahead 4-1 and then 7-2 before Houston closed the gap to 10-8 and then going ahead 12-11 prompting a timeout by coach Angie Filbrun.
The girls responded and retook the lead 15-14 and then jumped ahead to 21-17. Back came the Cats tying the set at 22 and then finishing the match by winning the 3rd set 25-22.
After the game I spoke with coach Filbrun who was a little frustrated but also saw some positive things as well.
“We showed some of our inexperience tonight, some of that due to our youth … but we really did some good things as well. We just need to be more consistent and string those good things together more,” Filbrun said.
Having just one senior in Skylar Bauman reflects that youth.
Knowing this was going to be her last game at home Skylar was trying her best to do everything she could for the team.
“We are going to miss her she has been a varsity player for 4 years. She started as a setter her sophomore year and that’s tough, but she worked her tail off and to be where she is now has meant a lot to our program. She is a vocal and emotional leader and brings energy to this team,” Filbrun concluded.
Skylar would lead the Jets with 14 assists and 8 kills in the match. Layni Norris has 19 digs to lead in that category.
The loss dropped the Jets to 11-10 overall on the season. They finished 7-4 in the first year of the Western Ohio Athletic Conference in 5th place.
They will have a couple of weeks off before they play in the OHSAA DIV Covington North 2 Sectional. The Jets were #12 seed and have a bye and will play a second-round game verses the winner of #15 Ansonia vs #11 Yellow Springs. That game will be at Covington on Saturday October 23rd at 12:30pm
