FM Boys Basketball Score Big Win Over Preble Shawnee

PITSBURG – Franklin Monroe boys basketball team scored an impressive early season win over Preble Shawnee in a mild upset by the score of 58-54.

“I think maybe they might have been a little bit stunned because they probably expected to put a few more points, especially in the first half,” FM coach Troy Myers said.

They are a super talented team and obviously #24 is a really good player, he’s probably right behind Sarver in our league so if you give him 30 points they’re probably going to beat you, we focused on trying to limit his touches, you can’t stop him scoring altogether but we were able to slow him down,” Myers stated.

The game was a little late getting to start due to the junior varsity game going two overtimes that the Jet’s won in dramatic fashion 44-43 which was an indicator of things to come.

“I thought the atmosphere was real good tonight. Our jv’s went late. So obviously, you get some people showing up towards the tail end. But I just thought the energy in the building was good on both sides, really,” Myers exclaimed.

That energy flowed into the varsity contest in what was a very physical and intense game.

The Arrows jumped out front on a triple from Mason Shrout (#24) and then a nice left hand lay-in at the rim to go up 5-2.

Franklin Monroe went on an 8-0 run to go up 10-5 spearheaded by the hot hand of jr guard Karson Wright who had 3 straight triples that put the Jets up 13-7 at the 2:49 mark.

Shawnee battled back closing the gap to 15-13 by the end of the 1st quarter and got balanced scoring; Shrout 5, Ethan Woodard and Dylan Campbell each added 4 points.

Defensively the Jets didn’t give up anything easy in the 2nd quarter holding Shrout to a field goal with Campbell adding 5 more and Aaron Agee a deuce.

Franklin Monroe put up another 15 points; 6 from Ethan Garber inside, 5 more from Wright and a big triple from Gabe Sargent to make the score 30-22 at the half.

Landon Keller scored a basket followed by Wright’s 4th triple and a fielder inside from Garber would give Franklin Monroe their biggest lead of the game 37-22 at the 5:00 minute mark in the 3rd quarter.

The arrows starting chipping away getting a boost from Xavier Adams as the big man battled inside to try and open the floor up a bit.  He scored inside and surprised everyone by knocking down a triple.  The Arrows narrowed the gap to 41-30 heading into the final stanza.

The final quarter was a physical battle as both teams grinded neither willing to give an inch.

Aaron Agee and Xavier Adams combined for 10 points and Mason Shrout was doing everything he could to help bring the Arrows all the way back with 9 points in the 4th quarter, but the Jets were able to withstand their furious late game rally.

Guys coming up big late were Brandon Rumble going 4-6 from the free throw line, Landon Keller with a bucket and Ethan Garber who went 6-6 from the charity stripe to help the Jets seal the win 58-54.

“This was a crazy ballgame, and our kids answered the bell, defensively. We had a plan coming in and I thought they executed that plan.  So, you got to give them a lot of credit they played their tail off, and fortunately, we got the job done,” an elated Troy Myers said after the game.

It was a big win early in the season for the Jets and one that may have implications in the league race down the road.

“Obviously, it’s a big win for our kids this game will prove to them that the way we’ve been approaching things daily, this is a result of that. They knew what we had to get accomplished, and I feel like they played like we’ve been practicing.  That’s what gives them confidence to execute and do some of the stuff that we need to do,” Myers concluded.

Franklin Monroe was led by Karson Wright with 17 points and Ethan Garber added 14 and 8 rebounds.  Ky Cool handed out 7 dimes and had 4 steals as well.

Preble Shawnee was led by Mason Shrout with 19 points, 5 assists, Dylan Campbell 12 points and Xavier Adams 10 along with 8 rebounds.

The Arrows now stand at 2-1 on the year and 0-1 in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference.  Preble Shawnee will play Valley View on Thursday and then host National Trail in WOAC play on Friday night.

The Jets now stand at 2-2 on the year overall and 1-0 in the WOAC, they will play at Dixie in league play Friday night and then take on Greenville on their Hall of Fame night on Saturday.
