GREENVILLE – Double M Diner completed its 10th year of providing a Thursday night team meal for the Greenville Green Wave football team prior to its Friday night football game.
“We are very thankful for the support that we get and I know our kids and coaches are very appreciative of it,” said Greenville Athletic Director, Aaron Shaffer. “It really wouldn’t be able to happen if our local businesses, community groups and some individuals that support our teams and our team meals.”
Double M Diner owner, Shelly Walker spends no less than five hours over several days preparing the meal for the team and coaching staff as well as providing the food and drinks at no charge to the program.
“We enjoy providing the meal for the team to support the Greenville school system and teams,” Walker said.
The team meal provide by Double M Diner includes a pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, slaw, chocolate cake and a drink.
“The comradery of a team meal, whether it’s the day before a game or the day of a game – it’s just a neat time for the kids,” Shaffer stated. “It’s a good experience for the kids to be together and spend some time together.”
The Thursday night team meal is the combination of Shelly and her husband Chet Walker, owner of Walker Construction. “Chet always helps,” noted Shelly.
“Athletics are important – grades are more important,” Walker said of her support for the local school program.
Shelly and Chet are the parents of Greenville graduates; Noah Walker class of 2019 and Brittni Walker class of 2021.
“Baking cakes and getting everything in order,” Walker said of the several days leading up to the meal.
“We have been very fortunate over the years to have a lot of local support,” said Shaffer, “We continue to get that support and we appreciate it.”
