More than 200 drivers compete in Smash It Demolition Derby to close out 2021 Great Darke County Fair
DARKE COUNTY – The 2021 Great Darke County Fair came to a close Saturday night before a packed Smash it Demolition Derby grandstand crowd both in the grandstand and the trackside bleacher in the pits. Prior to the “big” cars main event, the evening began with a kids Power Wheels Demolition Derby.
More than 200 competitors took to the muddy grandstand infield in hopes of being the last car running and earn a cash payout on the night while local fire firefighters stationed themselves off to the side of the ring in case of emergency.
Before the second heat of the night fans were treated to a Piqua driver proposing the his girl friend to the delight of the onlookers.
The Smash it Demolition Derby is the largest single fair event annually with veteran fair board member, Dave Niley overseeing the derby.
“It takes all year,” Niley said of managing the derby. “You talk to a lot of people and you treat them right and they come – you keep them coming back.”
Niley has been managing the local fair derby since he was first elected to the fair board – “ever since I have been on the board 20 some years,” noted Niley.
Assisting Niley with the 2021 derby was younger board member Matt Sullivan while “learning the ropes” of the large fair event.
“I’m trying to learn everything I can because my mentor is good,” said Sullivan. “If Dave gives it up I’ll take care of it.”
“We’re going to be in good hands – real good hands,” Niley said with a smile. “Matt’s a good guy.”
