Arcanum Lady Trojans and Tri-Village Lady Patriots set a high bar with three 3-point shooters on both teams

DARKE COUNTY – Darke County has the bragging rights to not one but two adjoining school districts, Arcanum-Butler and Tri-Village each with three varsity girls basketball players with more than 1,000 points in a career playing in the same season, 2021-2022.

The feat is a first for the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) girls basketball program with neighboring schools, both schools in the same conference (Western Ohio Athletic Conference, both head coaches serve as their school’s Athletic Directors, the centers from both teams reached the 1,000 point plateau and two stellar 3-point shooters from each team hit the mark.

For a school to have one career 1,000 point career player is noteworthy but three girls on the same team is highly unlikely. Add to that, two neighboring schools in the same conference each with three 1000 point scorers is unheard of.

“It’s the first time we’ve had three one thousand point scorers playing together,” said Tri-Village coach, Brad Gray. “I’ve had teams where we had that many one thousand point scorers but it wasn’t all when they were together – couple of those kids were younger and then got it after the other couple graduated so to have three on the same team is a really unique thing and to have two schools who have done that so close together with us and Arcanum is kind of a neat thing.”

“It says a lot about the level of basketball in our area,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore. “That is a milestone that is pretty uncommon and shows the hard work all six of those girls put in. It shows what kind of teams they have too and that is the most important part. I think if you ask any six of those girls they will tell you it takes their team to get that done, but it is pretty special to be a part of that – and I think Coach Gray would say the same thing.”

Arcanum reached the milestone on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 in a 68-26 road win over the Eaton Lady Eagles with Taylor Gray scoring her 1000th point.

Madelyn Fearon scored her 1000th point for Arcanum one game earlier, Saturday, January 15, 2022 in a 54-16 Lady Trojans home win over the Versailles Lady Tigers.

Arcanum’s all-time leading Lady Trojans scoring record holder, Hailey Unger scored her 1000th point her junior season in a 72-38 win over the Franklin Monroe Lady Jets coming on Saturday, January 24, 2021.

Two Tri-Village Lady Patriots juniors, Rylee Sagester and Morgan Hunt scored their 1000th points this season and senior, Meghan Downing recently score her 1000th career point.

Sagester scored her 1000th coming on the sharpshooters 200th career 3-pointer  in a 66-38 home win over the Newton Lady Indians in a game played Thursday, December 9, 2021.

Hunt’s 1000th point came on Monday, January 3 in a 59-31 win over the DI Sidney Lady Yellow Jackets.

Tri-Village’s 6’2” Meghan Downing notched her 1000th point on Saturday, February 5 in a game the senior scored a career high 31-points in her last home game playing for the Lady Patriots.

“Our kids put in a lot of time – I’m sure Abbey’s kids have as well and there is not secrets to success,” Coach Gray stated. “When you work really hard at things you tend to have success doing it and that’s what our kids have certainly been able to do and hopefully both teams will continue to not only put up points but win basketball games.”

“They are hard workers, they are gym rats and that is going to lead to good things in their life – that’s going to go on to help them be good at whatever profession they choose as long as they have that same work ethic,” Coach Moore concluded. “It’s pretty special especially having two teams in the area it just makes it extra special.”
