Daniel Is Church’s New Director of Worship, Communications

ANSONIA– Kelly Daniel has joined the worship team at the Ansonia First Church of God.

She is pastor of worship and communications starting in that interim leader position on Dec. 20, 2020, and then took the permanent position of pastor on March 28 this year. She was ordained in a special ceremony at the Ansonia church last month.

What brought the Englewood woman to this Darke County community?

“Well it’s a God thing really,” she said. “In November of 2020, I was on a call with the credentialing board about my pastoral licencing and Pastor Derek Specht, lead pastor of Ansonia First, is on the state board. I mentioned how I was not currently serving in a vocational ministry role but was prepared for what the Lord may have for me next. The day after that call, Pastor Derek reached out to me regarding a need Ansonia had for a worship leader. I agreed to come on as interim worship leader to help out, but was expecting it to be short term. Some three months later, after leading and serving at Ansonia First Church of God, it became very clear to myself and my husband that this was the place we were meant to be. I was invited to stay on in the capacity of worship and communications pastor and gladly accepted the role. My family and I love our new church family and are so thankful for the leadership, teaching, and mission focus of Pastor Derek. I am honored to serve our congregation and the community.”

Her responsibilities in that capacity are broad, she indicated.

“From creating engaging worship settings, planning and leading worship services on Sunday, building teams, mentoring leaders, bringing the occasional sermon, designing all our media content, partnering with our boards to reach the community in new ways, creating all our print and digital communications, to one on one discipleship with church members,” she said. “It’s a wide range of things but it’s the most rewarding of missions. The fact that I get to use my skills and my life to love and lead people, while teaching and sharing the hope of Jesus is a privilege and an honor.”

Daniel is the daughter of Ron and Glenda Nelson, both born and raised in Michigan. Kelly was born in Indiana, lived in Miami. Fla., a short time and grew up in Englewood.

“My husband, Brad, is also from the Englewood/Union area and we actually met during our senior year of high school at Northmont,” she said. “We have been married since 2008 and have two beautiful children, our son, Levi (9) and our daughter, Laney (8). They are the joy of our lives.”

The couple will remain where they are and plans to continue commuting to Ansonia in this new venture.

Kelly said at the top of her list of interests and hobbies is “Music, Music, Music!”

“My family often refers to me as ‘the radio’ cause there’s not much I haven’t heard,” the pastor said. “Music is such a fun hobby but, through worship, music is also the way I feel most connected to the Lord. Music is unique in that it can invade your heart and mind WITHOUT your permission. It just moves you. It’s a divine gift and I love helping people experience that. My other hobbies would have to be exploring nature and spending quality time with our family and friends. I love people…oh, and anything involving coffee. Coffee is the other Vitamin C.”

From the time Kelly was a child she said she felt called to work in ministry.

“I grew up in a strong Christian home and was always a part of church ministry but honestly it wasn’t till a few years ago that I thought it would be my full-time career,” she said. “I served in many roles in ministry, both volunteer and on staff, from the time I was 16 and then I began formally working on my ordination credentials at the age of 30.”

A member of the Church of God Ministries, Anderson, Ind., she was serving as director of worship ministries at Salem Church of God in Clayton before coming to Ansonia.

Salem Church of God was her family’s home church from 2008-20.

“My family and I think Ansonia is such a lovely place,” she said. “Everyone has been so kind, generous and welcoming. They have made us feel connected and like we are already part of the family. I am so thankful the Lord led us here.”
