Commissioners talk solar farms, public disposal events

GREENVILLE—The Darke County Board of Commissioners met on Thursday to discuss public disposal events and the opioid epidemic. Commissioners Matt Aultman, Mike Stegall and Larry Holmes were all present.

The board accepted two quotes from Crowe Shredding and Document Destruction for public shred events on June 11 and Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Darke County Fairgrounds, a quote from Rumpke for tire recycling on Sept. 21 and a quote from Environmental Enterprises for household hazardous waste collection on, Oct. 1.

The quotes will go to the Darke County Solid Waste District for review.

Next, the board approved Resolution (R-87-2022), to establish policies and procedures for development of certain solar and wind facilities. The resolution states Substitute Senate Bill 52 of the 134th General Assembly (S.B. 52) provides authority for boards of county commissioners to restrict the location and size of certain solar and wind facilities developed within their jurisdiction.

S.B. 52 creates additional local hearing processes, local involvement measures and notice requirements but gives board of county commissioners the discretion to exercise the authority provided to them in S.B. 52 in either regular or special meetings.

The commissioners desire to adopt policies that address the development of certain solar and wind facilities, consistent with S.B. 52 and that provide objective measures and policies by which the board will evaluate proposals for development of certain solar and wind facilities in Darke County.

Commissioner Holmes said that this resolution pertains to future renewable energy projects. The Painter Creek Solar Project will not follow these guidelines as it has already begun.

The Darke County Board of Commissioners hold regular session every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at 520 South Broadway, Greenville, Ohio 45331. For more information contact the commissioner’s office at 937-547-7370.
