Commissioners talk public defenders, American Rescue Plan

The Darke County Board of Commissioners met on Monday afternoon to talk public defenders and the American Rescue Plan. Commissioner Matt Aultman and Larry Holmes were present. Commissioner Mike Stegall was absent.

The board approved Resolution (R-362-2021), to reappoint Scott Zumbrink and Travis Fliehman as public defenders. Their current terms were set to end Dec. 31, 2021, with the reappointment they will both serve another four year term until Dec. 31, 2025.

The Darke County commissioners established a public defender commission on Nov. 24, 2003. The board appoints three members and Darke County Common Pleas Judge Jonathan P. Hein appoints two members.

The board approved Resolution (R-363-2021), authorizing expenditures from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The prosecutor’s office, health department and the board’s legal advisors have reviewed the U.S. Treasury Interim Rule as related to ARP eligible expenses which includes an amendment to the budget of $19,955 for ARPA expenditures for the SHI computer contract.

Additional ARPA contracts, projects and budget amendments will be brought to the board for approval as the County takes additional steps in the implementation of an ARPA spending plan.
