The Arcanum Lady Trojans open conference play with a 3-1 win over the Ansonia Lady Tigers

ANSONIA – The Arcanum Lady Trojans made a visit to the Ansonia to take on the Lady Tigers in the 2022 WOAC season opener for both high school volleyball programs and come away with a 3-1 win.

The Lady Trojans took the opening set 25-14 before Ansonia stepped up its game only to come up short in losing set No. 2 of the night 25-21 and trail 2-0.

“We knew Ansonia wasn’t just going to lay down,” said Arcanum coach, Jacie Holman. “We knew they were going to come in strong especially after the Greenville Federal Invitational. I have to give them credit, they came out really strong tonight and gave us a good hard work-out.”

The Lady Tigers continued to improve downing the visitors 25-19 sending the match to set four with Arcanum up 2-1.

“We knew Ansonia was going to be scrappy when we came in but I don’t think I knew they were that scrappy,” said Coach Holman. “They really gave us a run for their money. There were a lot of attacks that I thought were guaranteed kills and somehow they were able to get it up and not just get it up but they were able to get it back over the net and give us a good run.”

“We had several girls playing out of positions,” Ansonia coach, Darcy Buckingham noted. “We had a couple sick and injured so we did great considering.”

“Everyone took it upon themselves – when girls are out of position they all kind of mesh a little bit better to help the girls that aren’t normally in those positions,” continued Coach Buckingham. “I think it did work a little to our favor tonight.”

The Lady Trojans battled back from a 5-point fourth set deficit to pull out a 25-21 victory in earning the Western Ohio Athletic Conference win.

“We wanted to come in and get that first conference win so I am proud of them,” said Coach Holman. “First (WOAC) win but we’re not done.”

“I’m not disappointed in our play at all tonight,” Buckingham stated. “From Saturday to today we’re making huge strides.”

Arcanum improves to 3-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Ansonia drops to 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in WOAC action.
