Arcanum smashes defensive record in win over Twin Valley South

The Arcanum Trojans hold Twin Valley South to 13-points in WOAC win to set boys all-time defensive record

ARCANUM – The Arcanum Trojans smashed it previous defensive game record of a 19 by a whopping 6-points (32-percent) in defeating the visiting Tri-County North Panthers 35-13 in WOAC play.

“We don’t get too caught up in those records but it’s a nice accomplishment for our kids,” said Arcanum coach, Roger McEldowney. “Our guys played really hard defensively and executed the game plan that we wanted to – and I am proud of them.”

The previous record was set in 2018-19 season vs Bradford and the 2019-20 season against Franklin Monroe.

Arcanum jumped out the a 10-2 lead after one period of play getting a 3-pointer and a basket from Garrett Garno for 5-points, a Jake Goubeaux trey and a Nick Sharritts bucket.

The Trojans and the Panthers played to an 8-3 second quarter sending the teams to the break with Arcanum leading 18-5 after 16-minutes of play. Sharritts paced Arcanum with 4-points, Chad Pitzer nailed a 3-pointer and Garno added a free throw.

Period No. 3 mirrored the opening period with Arcanum winning the quarter 10-2 with five Trojans (Goubeaux, Garno, Bryson Sharp, Sharritts and Chase Worling) getting in the scorebook sending the teams to the final period with Arcanum up 28-7.

The final quarter of play saw the visitors score nearly half its points on the night – a total of 6-points while Arcanum was 1-point better at 7-points to give the Trojans a 22-point win.

Sharritts led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 9-points as neither team would get a player in double figures on the night.

“We didn’t score many points but we didn’t need to,” McEldowney stated. “We missed some easy shots inside that we normally finish but I give Twin Valley South credit. They had a good defensive plan, they were trying to take the inside away and was able to get enough pressure on the outside so give those guys credit, they’re 9-3, they’re a good team and it was a great win for us.”

Arcanum senior, Ian Baker was in uniform following a lengthy recovery from an earlier football injury while senior Jake Goubeaux continues to get back in to playing form following a first game injury putting the team’s scoring leader on the bench for a big part of the season.

“We are getting better and it seems like we have different guys stepping up every night,” said Coach McEldowney. “Ian is really working hard on trying to get back. I think he’ll be the final piece of the puzzle if we can get him back to or close to back to where he was before.”

“Jake has to continue to work on his conditioning, he is playing really well for us,” McEldowney added. Those are two guys we thought we would get 30-points from (per game) at the start of the year most nights out. We have to get them all meshed back together – I am looking forward to that challenge.”

South came into the night with a 5-0 undefeated WOAC mark averaging 54.1 points per game while Arcanum took the court with a 4-1 record. Arcanum improves to 8-3 on the season and 5-1 in conference play. Twin Valley South falls to 9-4 on the year and 5-1 in the conference.
