Arcanum planning committee talks schools, traffic light

ARCANUM—The Arcanum Planning Committee met on Thursday, April 21 to discuss a couple of ongoing projects regarding the Arcanum-Butler School District and the Village of Arcanum.

The committee met with Dick and Dee Mathias, and John Stephens, Arcanum-Butler School Superintendent, to discuss a potential project between the Mathias’s, Arcanum Schools and the Village.

While still in the preliminary stages, the group discussed the Mathias’s donating a small portion of their property off of SR 49 Alt to the school. The committee discussed adding an additional entrance to the back of the school off of SR 49 alt with the donated property.

The committee will go back to Access Engineering with notes from the meeting regarding infrastructure concerns. While the project is still in its very early stages, Kessler said he’d like to see the project done within in the next two years.

The group lastly discussed the Village Council’s ongoing stop light project. The village would like to install traffic lights on both sides of Trojan Avenue near the school building. The project will include crosswalks and a flashing yellow caution light that the committee plans to operate during school hours only.

The safety committee recently received word that the warrant study performed on Sierra Lane and Trojan Avenue failed due to inadequate auto traffic. The committee is waiting to review the results from ODOT.

“All I know is that it did not pass for justification for putting a traffic light up,” Village Administrator Bill Kessler said. “I’m asking the state to pay for both traffic lights, so if they don’t pay for that second traffic light, that’s a lot of money.”

The most recent estimated cost of the project is around $800,000. Whatever the grant doesn’t pay for will be covered by the Highway fund. The projected timeline for project is five years.

The group discussed several different scenarios should they not receive approval from ODOT for the second light, and are awaiting the warrant study results to determine next steps. The Planning Committee will meet again tonight at 5 p.m.

The Arcanum Village Council meets every second and last Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m., at 309 S. Albright St., Arcanum, Ohio 45304. For more information contact the village administration office at 937-692-8500.
