Arcanum Trojans too much for Dohn Panthers
ARCANUM – The Arcanum Trojans took care of the Dohn Panthers in a business-like fashion to open their season with an easy win, 40-8. The opening drive of the night saw Bryce Schondelmyer complete 6 of 6 passes and get the early lead. He would be a factor in all of the scores by Arcanum as he would either run or pass for each score. The Trojan defense likewise took care of business as the Panthers would find 1st downs few and far between for most of the game. Dohn did manage a score late in the fourth quarter to prevent the shutdown, scoring with 1-second left on the clock.
Offensively, the Trojans spread out the field with no one in the backfield for most of the game. They threw short passes, but aired it out from time to time. Schondelmyer only had 1-interception. The Panthers tried several different looks to try and catch the Trojans off guard. Shot gun formation, single running back with the quarterback under center, but no matter what they tried to use, the Trojans jammed the running game and only allowed a few completions.
Coach Schondelmyer on the win, “You practice so much in football. It’s an opportunity to play again someone with different jerseys on. It was a good first game.”
Next he was asked about Bryce Shondelmyer, “He works so hard at this game. He works the year around on football, and it shows. When you work that much things slow down on Friday nights. Things are not as fast. But our linemen did a good job of protecting, he had plenty of time. And our receivers did a great job catching the ball – they all can catch and can run with the ball.”
The Trojan defense took some hard knocks at Ada last week but did a good job of bottling up the Panther offense. They had maybe one first down in the first half and had maybe a half dozen first downs on the night – the bulk of those coming in the waning minutes of the game as they hustled to score before the game ended. The defense had a fumble recovery and Brennen Troutwine had 2-interceptions – one of which he returned for a touchdown, so they were able to generate some turnovers as well.
“Against Ada we had some defensive blunders. We were a little too passive and not attacking enough. There was no hesitation tonight and we were attacking – running downhill. It was a big step up from last week at Ada to what we saw here tonight.”
Next week Arcanum will host Twin Valley South. “They are a good football team. I have seen them a little bit. Their numbers are good, they are an upcoming team. It will be a real test for us next week.”
Importantly for the Trojans – no injuries. So they will be at full strength as they open league play for the first time in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference next Friday.
Scoring: Schondelmyer to Ian Baker 26-yd TD, Schondelmyer 10-yd TD run, Schondelmyer to Zade Shank 24-yd TD, Brennen Troutwine INT 45-yd TD. Schondelmyer to Baker 8-yd TD.
