Arcanum Trojans defeat Newton to stand alone atop WOAC

PLEASANT HILL – The Arcanum Trojans and the Newton Indians went head to head in a Thursday night WOAC matchup with first place on the line and it was the Trojans coming away with a 2-0 victory to stand alone atop the conference with an 8-1 record while Newton drops to 9-2.

Arcanum’s Bryson Sharp and Jaxson Christ collected back-to-back one-out first inning hits with Christ drilling a double to put both runners in scoring position.

Carson Tegtmeyer drilled two-out 2-RBI single plating Sharp and Christ in what would prove to be the lone runs scored on the night.

Newton battled back in the bottom of the first loading the bases with no outs bringing a visit to the mound from the Arcanum dugout. Arcanum junior starting pitcher, Caden Thompson went to work striking out the next three hitters keeping the home team off the board.

“The guys battled though,” said Arcanum veteran coach Randy Baker. “They had the bases loaded and no outs and Thompson strikes the next three guys out which was huge. He pitched with traffic on the bases most of the night. We only had two clean innings where they had no guys on.”

“After we get two and we don’t give up any we’re thinking if we can get out of there with a tie game we’re ok but then all the sudden he strikes three guys out,” Baker added. “Couldn’t ask for any more there.”

The Indians loaded the bases in the bottom of the third-inning but it was the Arcanum big right hander getting out of the inning with a groundout to third holding Newton scoreless.

The teams matched goose eggs over the final six-innings giving the Trojans sole possession of first place in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference.

Caden Thompson pitched an Arcanum complete game shutout to earn the Trojans win.

“Thompson threw well tonight,” stated Coach Baker. “He fell behind sometimes but he was fired up and he was ready to go so huge win – to me that was the game when he had bases loaded him coming in and throwing strikes.”
