Arcanum gets WOAC win over Franklin Monroe with nine Lady Trojans in the scoring column
PITSBURG – The Arcanum Lady Trojans earned a 54-26 WOAC win over the Franklin Monroe Lady Jets in Thursday night action.
The state’s No. 3 ranked DIII Arcanum Lady Trojans rolled out to a 17-4 lead after one quarter of play led by Taylor Gray’s 7-points.
Arcanum took the court for the first time with three of five starting seniors (Hailey Unger, Madelyn Fearon and Taylor Gray) having reached the 1,000 point career scoring milestone.
Coach Moore appreciates all five of her starters and bench players as well and is quick to point out it takes a team to reach team goals while complementing her two remaining senior starters; Ellie Fout and Meghan McCans.
“They are the glue that holds it together,” Coach Moore said of Fout and McCans. “I can’t speak enough about those two.”
“The screens that Ellie sets – there’s girls that may have some nightmares about the screens she sets,” Moore continued. “That gets our shooters open and Meghan, both of them, all of them, every girl on this team I love to have and I am really going to miss those girls, they bring so much to the team.”
“Meghan has stepped in after an injury previously in her career and to continue to have the confidence to come out and play as hard as she does shows a lot about her determination,” added Moore. “That is going to go a long way for her not only in the next season but in life too.”
Period No. 2 had Arcanum up 26-6 with 5:11 on the second quarter clock with the teams settling on a 40-10 halftime score. Hailey Unger paced the Lady Trojans with eight of the team’s 23 second quarter points including two 3-pointers.
With the game well in hand and a second half running clock, Coach Abbey Moore rested her starters nearly the entire second half with Arcanum winning the third quarter by an 8-7 score and the Lady Jets taking the final period 9-6.
“This is an opportunity to work on some different things to give some younger girls playing on JV an opportunity and come out here and play,” said Moore. “FM is going through a lot of injuries right now and hats off to Coach Shellabarger for keeping them working hard and improving and getting them motivated going through that much adversity – that’s not easy to do.”
“Tonight was an opportunity for us to work on some new things,” Coach Moore added. “I wish we would have executed a little bit better at certain times of the game. We had a lot of turnovers but they were aggressive so it’s good because it still gives us things to work on tomorrow in practice.”
Unger led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 14-points as the Lady Trojans would get nine players in the scoring column.
