Arcanum Lady Trojans JV earns comeback win over Carroll

Lady Trojans JV battle back with 16-6 fourth quarter to defeat Carroll Lady Patriots JV

ARCANUM – The Arcanum junior varsity team defeated the visiting Carroll Lady Patriots 31-26 in a non-conference comeback win.

“A great win – I am very proud of them,” said Arcanum JV coach, Stevie Johnting. “I came out the beginning of the game; said have fun, this is your last game together, leave it all on the floor, nothing to lose here so I set some fun goals for them to achieve today and I can tell they really did leave it all out there. They really hustled and I am proud of them for that.”

Arcanum took an 8-4 lead after one period of play led by 3-points each from Rylee Leeper and Alexis Gibbons and a basket from Haley Smith.

The visiting Carroll Lady Patriots outscored the home team 11-6 in the second to take a slim 1-point lead to halftime over Arcanum. Gibbons paced the Lady Trojans with 4-points including 2-2 at the line and Ashlyn Miller added a 2-point basket.

Balls wouldn’t drop for Arcanum in the third period to trail by as much as 6-points before Carrol would close out the quarter 5-1 to extend its advantage to 20-15 with three periods in the book.

“I said good teams fight and if you show that you can fight and you leave it all out there, we are in this game and we’re going to come back,” Johnting noted.

Arcanum founds its shooting range in the final quarter outscoring the Lady Patriots by a double digit 16-6 score to earn a 5-point win over Carroll in the Lady Trojans last JV game of the 2021-2022 season.

Brooke Anderson led Arcanum with 9 fourth quarter points including 5-6 at the charity stripe, Smith added 4-points and Gibbons tossed in 3-points.

“They executed the quick hitter plays that I called and that was huge,” said Johnting following the win. “We hit free throws tonight which huge.”

“Brooke Anderson really took over in the fourth quarter, knocked down her free throws and the team knew that was the sealer in the game,” added Coach Johnting. “We handled the ball, we only had 10 turnovers tonight, that’s our goal, 10 or under so they met that as well and I am proud of them for taking care of it and persevering tonight”

Gibbons and Anderson shared game high honors each scoring 10-points for Arcanum. Carrol saw 10 Lady Patriots get in the scoring column, one player with 5-points, one with 4-points, four players with 3-points, three with 2-points and one with 1-point.

With the 2021-2022 season now history, Coach Johnting took a moment to talk about the remainder of the varsity season and the 2022-2023 JV season.

“I’m excited to get the eighth graders coming in but I am definitely going to lose a good chunk of my girls next year to varsity,” Johnting said. “I am proud of them, they worked really hard and they deserve it.”

“We’re sitting five – five of my starters are going along for the journey with varsity sitting the bench so I am proud of them for that,” added Johnting. “All five of them have earned that and the rest of us were along for the ride. We are all excited to see how far varsity can go this year and we don’t want it to end.”
