Arcanum Lady Trojans defeat Versailles Lady Tigers

Arcanum's defense holds the Versailles Lady Tigers to 16-points in non-conference Lady Trojans win

ARCANUM – The WOAC’s Arcanum Lady Trojans handed the MAC’s Versailles Lady Tigers a 54-16 non-conference loss in Saturday basketball action.

“Our defense was ready to play today,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore. “We had the shots, they were good looks but defensively I thought that was the key to the game today.”

“For some reason we are just struggling to be confident,” said Versailles coach, Tracy White. “Just the fact that we are coming to play Arcanum and Arcanum is senior laden – we know that these girls have played varsity all of these years and they have so many 1,000 point shooters.”

Arcanum grabbed a 13-0 first quarter lead before the teams would settle for a 15-2 Lady Trojans advantage after one quarter of play led by nine Madelyn Fearon points including two 3-pointers.

“Until Kaylee’s basket at the very end of the first quarter we were literally zero percent,” White said. ‘We couldn’t get anything to fall.”

The Lady Trojans extended its lead to 27-2 at the 3:40 mark of the second period with Hailey Unger drilling two 3-pointers and going 2-2 at the line to pace the home team with 8-points sending the teams to the break with Arcanum up 36-6.

Arcanum four year starter, Madelyn Fearon stepped to the free throw line late in the second to record her 1,000th Lady Trojans point bringing the game to a halt while Coach Moore presented the NCAA DII Old Dominican Lady Panthers signee with the game ball.

“Super proud of that kid,” said Coach Moore. “She’s a special kid.”

With the game well in hand, Coach Moore went to her bench in second half play as the teams would battle to a 9-9 third period for a 45-15 Arcanum lead with one quarter to play.

“We come out in the second half, we played more-calm in a way and we weren’t just throwing the ball everywhere and played loose,” White said.

The game was played with a running clock in the final period with the Lady Trojans taking period No. 4 by a 9-2 score giving the home team an impressive 38-point victory.

“Hats off to Tracy,” said Coach Moore. “She is doing a great job with these girls. They fight – those girls fought, they pushed us around and were very physical with us. They will get better as the year goes on.”

“Arcanum is a good team,” Coach White stated. “They have a lot of firepower, a lot of girls that have played varsity, they are very experienced.”

Arcanum was 13-15 from the free throw line for 86.6 percent shooting. Versailles went 2-6 for 33.3 percent from the line.

Fearon led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 16-points.
